Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their adventure. Your leader will record your travel insurance details on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of healthcare around the world, travel insurance is an essential part of every journey.

A service charge of 10% is usually included at most restaurants, so tipping isn’t necessary.

Depending on the time of year you are travelling, you may need to pack more lightweight or warmer items. Kazakhstan can get very hot and cold, so it is a good idea to pack a range of items to suit any forecast.

Since Kazakhstan is a more conservative country, it is recommended that travellers bring clothing covering the arms and legs (covering past the knee) to enter religious sites.

Tap water isn't safe to drink in Kazakhstan. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Your local leader will help you find filtered water. You may also like to bring water purification tablets.

It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

There is internet access available in the main cities, including at many hotels and cafes.

Reception is good in the main towns but not as reliable elsewhere. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your carrier if you wish to use your phone.

Toilet facilities may be very basic. Expect drop toilets outside of hotels and bring your own toilet paper as there may not be any.

While homosexuality is legal in Kazakhstan, the country is still not widely accepting of LGBTQIA+ people, especially outside major cities. Travellers are advised to be discreet and avoid public displays of affection.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group trip, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.
