Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

The closest cities to the Lake District are Lancaster and Manchester in the south, and Carlisle in the north. It's also well-connected with London, Birmingham, Newcastle and Glasgow.

If you’re travelling from outside of the UK, there are a number of international airports within 90 minutes of the Lake District by road or rail.

You can also jump on the West Coast Mainline train from London to Glasgow and stop at Oxenholme, or take a direct train from Manchester to Windemere on the Northern Rail. Or, jump on a National Express coach.

It's easy to get around the Lake District thanks to local train and bus services. You can take the Lakes Line train that runs from Oxenholme to Windermere (with stops in Kendal, Burneside and Staveley).

Or jump on a Stagecoach bus or the free shuttle bus from Cockermouth to Buttermere Valley (July to September).

The Lake District is pretty wet throughout the year. Even in the warmer months, you’ll likely experience the occasional shower.

The summer (June to August) sees drier, warmer weather and longer daylight hours to explore, making it a great time to explore the park's hiking trails.

Winter is a chilly and wet time of year and the days are short. However, the scenery is incredible when the skies are clear and you can see the snow-topped mountains and frost-topped forests that look like a winter wonderland.

Whatever activities you plan on doing, make sure you bring a sturdy pair of shoes, a fleece/jumper and a waterproof jacket.

If you’re visiting during winter, make sure you pack a warm winter coat, a woolly hat, gloves and a scarf.

Hikers should also pack long waterproof layers as the weather can get wild as you ascend the peaks.

You can get mobile phone coverage in the towns, villages and tourist hubs, but expect your coverage to be patchy when you’re in more remote areas and on trails at higher elevations.
