Salt Lake City in Utah enjoys an arid, temperate climate that sees high humidity levels and relatively even temperatures throughout the year. Due to the good weather all year round, there's no distinct popular time to travel to this bustling city. The summer season is a good time to enjoy the great outdoors as you can go on hikes, undertake water sports on the Great Salt Lake, and walk around the city center in the sunshine without a chance of rain. It does snow throughout the winter season in Salt Lake City with over 50 inches of snow received every year and up to 500 inches in the surrounding mountain rangesThe snow season can start around October to April but snow will typically fall between November to March as those are the coldest months in Salt Lake City. Snow can sometimes fall outside of those months if temperatures are cold enough but it is rare.
There are numerous ski resorts close to Salt Lake City where you can enjoy snow sports such as skiing and snowboarding, or you can also have a go at various Winter activities all year round at Olympic Park.
Is Salt Lake City dry?
Utah is classified as the second driest state in the U.S. behind Nevada with only 16.5 inches of rainfall recorded on average per year in the city area, usually happening in the Spring months, particularly in April. This means, that while it may snow during winter in Salt Lake City, it's unlikely to rain frequently. Salt Lake City also has a very humid climate so both summers and winters are unlikely to see extreme temperatures although temperatures can lower to below 0°F during December and January. The average temperature for winters in Salt Lake City is around -2°F.
What to pack for Salt Lake City in Winter
Temperatures can get below freezing in the winter months so packing warm clothes is necessary. You should opt for thick and waterproof coats, as well as other winter accessories including scarves, gloves, beanies, and proper waterproof shoes. If you plan on hitting the slopes you should also pack the appropriate clothing including ski pants, tops, and socks. If you forget to pack anything, you can always rent ski gear from numerous stores in the city centre.
As mentioned previously, Salt Lake City doesn't see a lot of rain, especially in winter, so you won't need to pack an umbrella.
