Get lost in spice plantations
Perhaps the most famous export from Zanzibar is its spices, including pepper, cinnamon and ginger to name a few. Visit a spice plantation to sample countless types of spices directly from the source. Don’t forget to pick up a selection from the local markets before you leave.
Wander through Stone Town
Zanzibar is an island province of Tanzania located off the coast of East Africa. Surrounded by the Indian Ocean on all fronts, it is covered mostly in lush rainforest and encircled by white beaches and coral reefs. Find the house where Freddie Mercury grew up or sample a delicious, world-famous Zanzibar pizza at the Forodhani night market.
Sail the Zanzibar archipelago
Chumbe Island is one of the few uninhabited coral islands in the world, protected by the multi-award-winning Chumbe Island Coral Park. Other popular snorkelling areas in Zanzibar include Nungwi Beach, Kendwa Beach, and Matemwe Beach. You can see butterflyfish, parrotfish, clownfish, boxfish, lionfish, angelfish, stingrays, turtles, dolphins, lobsters, squids, crabs, nudibranchs, starfish, cucumbers, sponges, shrimps and sea urchins. Mnemba Atoll (Mnemba Island Marine Reserve) is Zanzibar's most popular dive site.
Pop on a snorkel
Explore some of the 40 islands that make up the Zanzibar archipelago. There are many ways you can spend your day. Snorkelling in search of exotic fish is an excellent option, or you could take a traditional dhow boat on the water. You might also like to feast on a sumptuous lunch of grilled local seafood or relax in a hammock underneath a coconut tree with a good book. It's totally up to you!
