Why you'll love this trip
  • Go on an epic safari with expert local guides in search of lions, hyenas and more through Kruger National Park – one of the largest National Parks in southern Africa.
  • Enjoy a different perspective to traditional Game Viewing with a guided Hippo Boat Cruise on St Lucia Estuary, and a Walking Safari in Hlane Royal National Park.
  • Visit the heartlands of the Zulu people and spend the night in a homestay, where you’ll be treated to traditional food and song, plus a meeting with the local healer.
  • Embark on a half-day guided walk in the mighty Drakensburg Range – one of many spectacular hikes along the Garden Route that you can choose to discover in your free time.
  • Rise early with your small group to watch wild meerkats wake and warm in the morning sun, before continuing south to Swellendam – South Africa’s third-oldest town.

Is this trip right for you?
  • This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent, occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, and getting the best possible views of the Big Five. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The drive days can be long, but it’s as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/africa/overland
  • This itinerary includes a homestay in Zululand. Beds can just be a foam mattress on the floor, with clean linen and pillows, and rooms can be up to six-share, of the same gender. Hot water is not available on this night.
  • As the early bird catches the worm, the early camper sights the animals. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.

Too expensive for what is included, nothing in 4*4 and the truck is not suitable for that. Addo and kruger is too short. Tents and truck full of water with the rain, all windows and tents not sealed, not tested. Poor materials and design. Great staff and travellers, good itinerary.

You will not be disappointed with the stunning scenery along the east coast, from high up in the Darkensberg mountains and Lesotho to sea level at Cape Vidal and Cintsa. Kruger and Hlane National Parks were both amazing for different reasons - Kruger for its vastness and Hlane for being closer to the rhinos and hippos. If you are lucky to have Irvin (Ivan) Tshuma as a cook on your trip, you are in for a treat.

An incredible trip. A whirlwind adventure with early mornings, a lot of laughs, and many unforgettable stops along the way. Walking with rhinos in ESwatini, hanging out on the beach at Chinsta, and summiting Sentinel Peak were some stand out days. A huge thank you to Christian, Somkhele, and Patrick!

A truly amazing adventure combining the very best nature and cultural experiences that these three Southern African nations have to offer. Christian, Patrick and Somkhele welcomed us like family and it truly made the experience all the better for it.

This is my second trip with Intrepid - the first one being to New Zealand. Both have been amazing - while I'm not an "outdoorsy" girl, I wanted to do something outside of my comfort zone. This trip, although "basics", far exceeded my expectations on every level, the things I saw, the people we met, everything. I would recommend this trip to anyone with an adventurous spirit.
