Is this trip right for you?
  • Due to the high altitude of the places we visit some people can suffer altitude sickness, regardless of age, gender or fitness. It even happened to Sir Edmund Hillary! Please see the ‘Medical and Health Information’ section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.
  • Visitors are not permitted to explore Machu Picchu without a Machu Picchu guide (not our trip leaders) and must follow set routes within the site. This trip includes two guided visits of Machu Picchu and each visit is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours long. Your leader will provide more information to ensure you get the most out of your visits to this incredible site.
  • There are a couple of long drives on this trip, in particular on Days 5 and 8. These journeys are by private vehicle and although they may be a little tiring, they're a great chance to sit back and enjoy the passing scenery and chat to your fellow travellers.
  • According to Machu Picchu visiting regulations, all visitors must follow a pre-determined route within the site. This route must be followed in one direction only, and once the guided visit commences exiting and re-entering the site is not permitted. Once the guided visit concludes, visitors must exit the site and personal exploration of Machu Picchu is not permitted. Please refer to the itinerary for details.
  • Travellers who choose different ways of reaching Machu Picchu (Inca Trail, Quarry Trail or Train), will not follow the same routes within Machu Picchu. This means that you may not be able to have photos together, overlooking Machu Picchu. This applies to travellers on the same booking or separate bookings. It is possible for passengers who have taken the train to join passengers who have done the Inca Trail on the second visit of Machu Picchu, by repeating the guided tour. If you are interested in this option, you must tell your sales agent when you book.

My fantastic trip of Peru came to an abrupt end when I was hospitalising for acute mountain sickness in Cusco. The attention and care I received from the intrepid doctor, my team level and the local intrepid office was unbelievable. It was a very scary time for me as I was a solo traveller however everyone at intrepid when above and beyond with helping with the insurance company and ensuring that I had the best hospital care. During this time when I was a long way from my family I felt like I was part of the intrepid family and didn’t feel alone. So for anyone worried about medical emergency there is no need with Intrepid as you will received a level of support you didn’t even know that you needed.

The Intrepid tour we did in Peru exceeded our expectations as we are not the sort of people that do group tours as we like to be independent. We were impressed with the guides who imparted their knowledge with sincererity and humour. We would travel with them again and recommend Intrepid to all ages.
