Itinerary
O Canada! Home of ice hockey and maple syrup, and source of your soon-to-be fondest travel memories. It all starts in Vancouver. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight where you’ll meet your local leader and fellow travellers. If you arrive early in Vancouver, why not take a walk around the Victorian buildings in the historic Gastown neighbourhood, or maybe pick up a donut and a 'double-double' (that’s coffee with two cream and two sugars) from Tim Hortons. Tonight, maybe head out with your group for an optional dinner together and explore Vancouver's nightlife.
- Hostel (multishare) (1 night)
There are no meals included on this day.
It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.
ROOMING: The group will be in 4 person dorms separated by gender, with shared bathrooms.
Say goodbye to Vancouver this morning and hit the road for Kamloops. You've got a long drive ahead today, but you’ll also get your first glimpses of Canada’s incredible scenery along the way. Stop in at the town of Hope for the chance to stretch your legs and grab some lunch, then carry on to the hills of the Kamloops region for a night of camping. Settle into your peaceful surroundings and enjoy a night of swapping stories beneath the stars.
- Camping (with facilities) (1 night)
There are no meals included on this day.
Your travel time today will be approximately 5.5 hours.
Rise and shine for your first real taste of Canada’s great outdoors. Visit Mt Revelstoke National Park, home to the world’s only inland temperate rainforests. What does that mean? Evergreen woodland with ancient trees and moss-covered ground, just like the forests in fairy tales. The park is home to a small herd of woodland caribous plus grizzly bears and moose, along with a population of banana slugs. Get your fill of bush and beasties and then travel over Rogers Pass to Glacier National Park. Stop at the visitor centre and take in the panoramic views from lookouts along the way. Continue to Golden where you’ll spend the night.

This morning, head out to the Rocky Mountain Buffalo Ranch for a tour with the owner of the property. You'll get to learn about the history of the area and buffalo behaviours as you watch the incredible animals roam pastures backdropped by mountains. Then, return to Golden for a free afternoon. If you’d like to break in your boots (and don’t mind heights), there’ll be an optional walk to the Golden Skybridge, which’ll provide some incredible views of the Rockies from 426 feet in the air. Another option (not for the faint of heart) is to battle the wild waters of the aptly-named Kicking Horse River on a guided rafting tour.

If you’d like to wander, your leader can point you toward the best trails to tackle. You could also choose to battle the wild waters of the aptly named Kicking Horse River on a guided rafting tour. To take things a little easier, perhaps book a canoeing activity on the calm waters of Emerald Lake, or simply lie back on the riverbank and watch the world float by. Later, reconvene with the group and head to Takkakaw Falls for a quick stop before continuing to Banff National Park.

With the snowcapped peaks providing an incredible backdrop, the lake is beautiful no matter what time of year you visit. If you’d prefer to head out on your own, you may wish to stay behind and walk one of the many trails in the area. Then, pay a visit to a local brewery making highly localised beers. Ingredients from local growers, farmers and foragers all get used in their brewing process, so why not taste the results for yourself? Continue on to Whistler. We’re in the process of figuring out how much CO2-e this trip generates. In the meantime, learn more about our climate commitment.
When you travel with us, The Intrepid Foundation gives you more opportunities to support important causes in destinations you visit.
Why choose us
We’re adventure travel experts with decades of experience and proud to run trips in over 100 countries.
We keep our group sizes small and our experiences big, so you can get more out of your travels.
Leaders don’t just show off a destination, they’re the heart and soul of our trips.
The Intrepid Foundation gives back globally and our B Corp status is proof that we're dedicated to creating a positive impact.
Before you book you should know
- This trip covers a lot of ground so be prepared for some long drives. You'll be travelling in a van with a group, so conditions may feel a little cramped. This is all part of the adventure, and friendships form fast in tight quarters.
- This is a participatory trip. That’s a fancy way of saying you’re not just along for the ride – you're part of a team! Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and help with camp activities like food prep and washing up.
- That teamwork also extends to our optional food kitty of approximately CAD$20 per day to cover the cost of meals. This kitty saves you worrying about where to get food, sales taxes and helps keep your costs down by bulk purchasing items together. If you've got specific dietary requirements, you can opt out and purchase (and cook) your own food.
- Some activities in the Rockies have flexible opening and closing dates that vary based on snowfall at higher elevations and other seasonal conditions. On departures in May, early June, September, and October, some activities like gondolas, certain mountain hikes, or rafting may be unavailable, but these shoulder season months offer the advantage of fewer crowds and a more relaxed travel experience. Your leader will have a range of alternative activity suggestions no matter the season.
- The weather can be unpredictable in the mountains. We advise wearing layers in all seasons, including warmer months as conditions can be cold.
- Mosquitoes are most active during summer months and wetter seasons. To protect yourself, use insect repellent. Wear long-sleeved, light-coloured clothing especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
- To ensure you to get the most out of this trip, we recommend you are moderately fit. The hikes are a real highlight and give you access to some fantastic scenery.
NORTH AMERICA CAMPING
The campsites that we use are selected for either their scenic beauty, their convenient location to places of interest and/or the facilities available. We aim to offer you a selection of different types of campsites.
If you've never camped before - no problem! We provide a complete set of camping and cooking equipment. This includes roomy easy-to-pitch tents, which are shared by only two people and are equipped with thin foam rubber sleeping mats and vinyl floors. Your leader will show you how to pitch a tent on the first day. On many trips we also spend a few nights in reasonably priced hotels/motels/hostels (as per the itinerary).
Remember that sleeping bags and a pillow are not provided. Check out the Packing section for more information.
You'll find the necessary facilities - toilets and in most cases hot showers at our campsites. The showers at some campsites may require a payment (usually no more than US$1-$3 for a quick shower). This is payable locally and is a contribution towards the cost of a limited water supply. Rarely, a campsite may only have cold water available for showers. Some campgrounds may have paid washer and dryer faciltities - your leader will be able to advise on opportunities for washing clothing during the welcome meeting.
In all campsites there are strict quiet hours when no loud noise is allowed, typically from 10pm to 7am. This means that all music, singing and noisy group gatherings must stop. We request that all our travellers respect these campsite rules.
For trips where there are lodges/cabins used, couples travelling together may be separated when our rooming arrangements are based on single gender, however in some accommodations the group will be in mixed gender rooms.
Our high-quality camping equipment (including tents) can be affected by bad weather conditions. This can result in some wet and cold conditions inside the tent. Your spirit of adventure and flexibility will help make your adventure trip an exciting and unforgettable experience. On nights where the group is camping, and weather conditions are extreme (such as snow or heavy rain), there may be an opportunity for the group (if everyone agrees) to stay at an alternative location such as a nearby hostel or hotel. When this is the case the upgrade is at your own expense.
