Pristine waters, picturesque villages and Roman ruins – sailing the Mediterranean offers everything you can imagine and then some.
Cruising around the rugged Italian coastline, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve somehow stumbled onto the set of a Brigitte Bardot movie. One day you’re sailing past the pastel-coloured villages of the Amalfi Coast, the next rubbing shoulders with the locals and drinking martinis on the famous Isle of Capri, or hot-footing it to Pompeii to learn about its explosive past. While the cerulean waters and heavenly sunshine will tempt you to laze around on deck all day, with so much to see and do you won’t want to stay put!

Highlights of Italy sailing

Capri's Blue Grotto
Perhaps the Isle of Capri’s most alluring attraction is the iridescent Blue Grotto (or ‘Grotta Azzurra’ to the locals). When sunlight passes through this natural underwater cavity, it creates a stunning blue reflection that illuminates the cavern. Only accessible when the tide is calm, it is an enigmatic and dazzling experience you won’t want to miss.

Amalfi
It’s easy to see why the entire Amalfi Coast was named after this gorgeous gem. Wandering through Amalfi’s clusters of pastel-washed dwellings set atop steep cliffs makes for a thoroughly enchanting afternoon. However, Amalfi offers more than just pretty sights. The historic centre of town, the Piazza del Duomo is a must-see, as are the various paper-mills showcasing the town’s industrious history.

Sorrento
It would be a colossal injustice to visit Sorrento and leave without sampling its world-famous Limoncello. Made from alcohol, sugar, water and lush lemon rinds – of a size only found only in Sorrento – this Italian digestivo is a tangy and refreshing experience in itself. Perhaps the best thing about this liquor is the colourful characters who have been making it for centuries (who are more than eager to share the tricks of their trade).

Ischia
Sitting pretty in the Gulf of Naples, the island of Ischia is essential on any sailing adventure in Italy. It has a rich volcanic past – unsurprising given is sits in the shadow of the looming Mt Vesuvius – and visitors can unwind in the various ocean hot springs dotted around the island. Spiaggia dei Pescatori (or Fisherman’s Beach), with its picturesque views of the Aragonese Castle, is our pick for the best beach on offer.
Our boats

Bavaria 50
The Bavaria 50, despite its German name, will be your Italian home during your sailing adventure. It’s a classic monohull – meaning it has a single hull – but you’ll find there’s plenty of room to spread out. Below deck, the saloon has a large u-shape lounge which can easily seat 10 of your sailing mates. The galley is light and airy thanks to skylights and hatches. There are four cabins, with a choice of double or twin bunk cabins and three bathrooms.

We had a splendid tour of the Amalfi Coast. Gabriele, our guide, was terrific introducing us to some wonderful experiences. We are in our mid 60s, so we were a bit uncertain about taking the tour. But we didn't need to worry... we had a great time getting to know our twenty-something fellow sailors, in what turned out to be a five-star adventure. Gabriele made it all so easy, and I think we all felt very lucky to have him as our skipper.

Sailing the Amalfi coast was an amazing experience as we could see the area from a different perspective than most. The beautiful coast line and towns were spectacular and the experience on the boat with 7 other lovely people was great! Food and sights were wonderful and the leader was a great sailor as well as very knowledgeable about the culture.

Seeing the Amalfi coast from the coast is spectacular! This trip allows you an opportunity to see several towns along the Amalfi coast without the high cost of hotels and complicated logistics if you did it on your own! The food, the wine, the beauty of the towns are incredible! It's wonderful to be able to enjoy part culture and part relaxing on this trip!

Beautiful coastline which can be taken in slowly, relaxing on the boat. Interesting walks and activities including Pompii the scale of which is jaw dropping. The experience, knowledge and cooking of a well skilled skipper made this trip truly magical and one I will hopefully never forget.

This trip is an incredible way to see the Amalfi Coast. It was wonderful to sail to new places and visit local restaurants and markets and then return to our lovely yacht at night. This is the second Intrepid sailing adventure my sister and I have done and we loved it just as much as the first which was in Thailand. If you're lucky you will get Captain Paolo whose enthusiasm and joy for life is contagious. Paolo made sure we went to the most authentic local restaurants and went out of his way to ensure his passengers were safe and happy. Check out this article about the trip: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/article-4741836/Sailing-Amalfi-Coast-yacht-explore-Italy.html Enjoy!

We loved our first time on a sailing trip. Conditions in such a confined space with total strangers can be quite daunting but with the right attitude this can be an amazing experience.Lots of opportunity to really get to know the culture. Plenty of opportunity when on land to do things as a group ,individuals or couples. As the weather was so hot we enjoyed many opportunities to swim.

I highly recommend the Amalfi Coast Sailing Adventure. You are on a sailing boat however and have to be prepared for sea sickness as we had one lady on the trip who was sick for a whole day. You have to be prepared to use the toilet which you have to manually flush and keep your paper until you are on land. You also have to be prepared to stay in tiny rooms with no air conditioning or fans. Other than that I highly recommend it.

The trip was awesome. It gave an opportunity to connect with local history and culture, and the scenery was breathtaking. It was my first sailing trip. Our skipper Gabriel was very helpful and always make great suggestions for activities and dining. There is an opportunity to learn about sailing. Expect to meet new people. Since you are on a relatively small boat, most of the space is shared. Staying outside on the deck helps with sea sickness. On the nights when yacht is anchored in the sea is a bit rocky to sleep, but when it's docked in the marina it's not a problem.

If you are looking for a good introduction to sailboat cruising and the Amalfi coast this trip may be for you, but seasoned sailors beware. Choose this trip for a nice combination of water and land tours, but don't sailors may find themselves frustrated if focused primarily on desire for sailing experience.

Sailboat was beautiful and our skipper was excellent and enthusiastic. There is no better way to see the Amalfi coast and no better way to enjoy swimming in the sea than from a sail boat. Note: if you have reservations about bunking with a stranger, know that it IS close quarters but the other people on the trip will likely be so great, it won't matter. I am so glad I had this experience!!
