Weather in Spain

Spain is known to be one of the warmest and sunniest countries in Europe regardless of the season, but weather patterns differ depending on where you are: you can expect mild summers and cold winters in the northern regions and hot summers and mild winters in the south. This is largely due to Spain's location between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

Located on the northeastern coast of Spain, Barcelona is not only a popular destination for its iconic sights (think Sagrada Familia and Guell Park) but also for its enjoyable, year-round weather with plenty of travellers flocking to its vibrant streets come July.

July and August are Barcelona's hottest months with an average high temperature of 28°C and 29°C respectively, while the winter months of January and February see low average temperatures of 5°C and 6°C. What is the weather like in Madrid?

Groups in a square in Madrid with Intrepid tour guide, Spain

Madrid is one of the best destinations in Spain to travel to due to its consistently pleasant temperatures during the autumn, winter and spring seasons. Average high temperatures in summer reach a sweltering 32°C in both July and August, while average highs in spring and autumn still sit at a comfortable 19°C and 18°C, respectively.

But with warm temperatures come hoards of people, so if you want to avoid the peak season crowds of summer, try travelling during April and May or September and October. Luckily, Madrid is a relatively dry city so you shouldn't experience heavy or prolonged rainfall during the shoulder seasons.

What is the weather like in San Sebastian?

Panoramic view of San Sebastian in the Basque Country, Spain

Due to San Sebastian's location on the northern coast of Spain, this popular beach city's weather pattern is influenced by strong winds off the Atlantic Ocean in winter, meaning cold and rainy conditions. January is the coldest month in San Sebastion with an average low temperature of 8.5°C.

But it's not all waterproof jackets and umbrellas. While on the cooler side, summertime in San Sebastian is still extremely enjoyable with average temperatures around 20°C. Days can even reach a swelteringly hot 35°C in both July and August. Our recommendation? Pack the sunscreen.

What is the weather like in Majorca?

Island scenery, seascape panorama Majorca Spain, Balearic Islands.

Majorca (or Mallorca) is a Balearic Island off the eastern coast of Spain, and thanks to its mild winters and hot, sunny summers, it's a popular year-round tourist destination. Rainfall is infrequent and almost never occurs in summer with a maximum of 400 mm (16 inches) recorded annually (mainly in autumn and winter).

The sunniest period in Majorca is from June to August (surprise, surprise) where there's an average of 10 sunlight hours per day. With more sun comes higher temperatures, so you can expect summer highs to reach a sweat-inducing 30°C+. Humidity levels will also rise during this time so make sure you're staying properly hydrated.
