Weather in San Francisco

San Francisco is a beautiful city to visit all year. It has a moderate maritime climate with mild winters and summers. Due to the city's close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, temperatures are steady throughout the year with averages of 7°C to 22°C. Rainfall is also fairly low compared to other parts of the country, with the wettest months being December through March.

When is the best time to travel to San Francisco?

San Francisco is a year-round destination. While summer generally offers the driest, sunniest weather, consider visiting in autumn (September to November) if you want to avoid the crowds. Temperatures are still fairly warm and there's very little rain. If autumn doesn't work for you, you could visit in spring (March to May).

Despite the mild temperatures, it's recommended that you bring sunscreen with you and apply it before you go outside, as the sun's UV rays can still be quite high. You should also make sure you have enough sweaters and colder-weather clothes with you, as the nights can get chilly.

Does it ever snow in San Francisco?

While snow can build up in other regions of California, it's very rare in San Francisco as the temperatures aren't cold enough.

This is mainly due to the city's close proximity to the Pacific Ocean which warms up any moisture in the air.
