Experience Lisbon like a local
Portugal’s charismatic capital is one of those places where simply going for a walk is exciting. Just a quick hop from Porto, you’ll stroll grand boulevards, ride the iconic Gloria cable car and wander the cobbled streets under the signature red terracotta rooftops. From live fado performances in Bairro Alto to seafood feasts by the Tagus River and hands-on lessons in making the country's famous pastry, everything is even better with a local leader by your side giving you the inside scoop on where to go, what to do and how it's done by the people who call Lisbon home.

Lisbon highlights
Visit Pena Palace in Sintra
Go to Sintra for the Pena Palace, stay for its unique Moorish architecture and beautiful walking trails. The colourful cliff-top palace and nearby Castle of the Moors are sites to see and the cooler climate in Sintra made for quite the summer retreat for royalty back in the day.
Step back in time
Check out Lisbon's history with a trip to the Sao Jorge Castle, a Moorish citadel above the Old Town, then head to the Naval Museum for a glimpse into the history of Portuguese navigation. You can also make a pit stop at the grand Jeronimos Monastery and Lisbon Cathedral, built on the site of an old mosque in 1150 by Lisbon’s first bishop.
Try local cuisine
Walk along Lisbon’s cobbled Alfama streets and sit down at one of the many cozy hole-in-the-wall spots or sunny outdoor cafes and try a pastel de nata – the country’s famous pastry – and sip some sweet cherry ginjinha – Portugal's iconic cherry liqueur. Trying some canned fish is a must, even if just one bite!
Ride the Gloria cable car
When you picture Lisbon, you probably picture the historic Gloria cable car, even if you don’t recognize the name! This bright yellow funicular is one of Lisbon’s most photographed images and a great way to get around town when it’s time to give your feet a break from all the uphill walking.
