See the Ice Maiden
Discover the chilling story of Juanita, the young Inca girl who became the Ice Maiden. Found frozen on Mt Ampato in 1995, her remains were remarkably well preserved – including her internal organs, skin and hair – and have provided archeologists with major insights into ancient Inca rituals.
Feast on regional delicacies
Some of Peru's favourite dishes hail from Arequipa. While you're here, don't pass up a plate of rocoto relleno (spicy meat-stuffed peppers), chupe de camarones (shrimp chowder) or queso helado ('frozen cheese' dessert made from condensed milk). If you're looking for a truly authentic meal, ask your leader where to find a picanteria (family-run lunch restaurant) to eat elbow-to-elbow with the locals.
Explore Colca Canyon
At over 3300 m deep, this is one of the world's deepest canyons (roughly twice as deep as Arizona's Grand Canyon for some perspective!). Stop in traditional Andean villages for a coca tea, hike past terraces farmed since Inca times or unwind with a soak in a volcanic hot spring. If you're lucky, you might see an Andean condor, one of the world's largest flying birds, soaring through the air.
