Why you'll love this trip
  • Join a family in Tlahuac to create an altar (or ofrenda as it's sometimes called in Spanish) to remember your ancestors and join in their colourful cemetery ceremonies.
  • Take a walking tour of Mexico City with your local leader, taking in the city’s most iconic sites – the Zocalo, Metropolitan Cathedral and Palacio de Bellas Artes.
  • Get the low-down on all the traditions and rituals watching the incredible Day of the Dead parade then fiesta the night away in Mexico City and get into the true spirit of this haunting ceremonial festival.
  • Visit the Frida Kahlo Museum in the historic Coyoacan neighbourhood - you'll check out the works in her former home and discover her art often focused on the notion of death.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll learn about our Intrepid Foundation partner, Gastromotiva. Donations help them provide nutritious, balanced meals for vulnerable people in Mexico. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Is this trip right for you?
  • This itinerary is designed to provide the best possible experience of the annual Day of the Dead festivities around Mexico City. As such, there is very limited free time to explore many of the area’s most popular tourist attractions, including the Museum of Anthropology, Teotihuacan and Chapultepec Park. We recommend you stay a few extra days before or after the tour to make the most of this vibrant metropolis. If you would like to spend more time in Mexico City, we’ll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).
  • We will be operating multiple departures of this tour so it possible that more than one group will be at some locations or activities at the same time. However, each group will have a maximum of 12 passengers with its own dedicated tour leader.

We did the Intrepid tour for Dia de Los Muertos We started in Mexico City, visited Tláhuac and Puebla Congratulations to Intrepid for creating this excellent immersing tour We loved Tláhuac being welcomed by locals, eat their food, drink their mezcal, visit the cemetery Our exceptional guide Karla is enthusiastic and fun and everyone in the village recognized her Visiting Puebla was truly exceptional too - a beautiful city; and again we were lucky to see a parade and just everything for these festivities Our hotel was changed from the original one and we were upset because we were moved from Zocalo to a further location but it turned out to be better because the neighborhood is trendy, safe, quiet lots of good restaurants The only thing that the hotel could improve is the service at front desk and and quality of breakfast Our van and driver excellent too. Once again I want to mention out tour director/ guide Karla for an above and beyond service We will be back

The Day of the Dead is one celebration not to be missed. Intrepid's program is the best there is but be ready for CROWDS in Mexico City. People come from all over Latin America for the celebration. The Frida Kahlo museum was amazing. But the best? Our visit to the small town of Tlahuac gave us an understanding of how the average Mexican celebrates & honours family members who have passed. Our leader, Mariana, was fantastic too. Highly recommend this trip so long as Intrepid can get a better handle on the logistics of running roughly 20 groups of 10-12 people.
