Why you'll love this trip
  • Unwind in seaside Split – a haven of relaxation and culture – and walk along the waterfront promenade to admire the impressive Diocletian's Palace before feasting on seafood.
  • Stroll through Plitvice Lakes National Park – a stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site – marvelling at luminous lakes and azure waterfalls that look like they’ve been sketched by an artist.
  • Feast on Mediterranean fresh seafood, Italian-influenced antipasti and the crunchy, doughy dessert of fritule in the culinary capital of Croatia – Zagreb. Then if you like, explore the touching Museum of Broken Relationships.
  • Explore the streets, medieval buildings and restored castle of Ljubljana’s charming Old Town on foot. Your local leader will know all the hotspots, plus the best cafes for a coffee break.
  • Journey to romantic Venice – like no other city in the world. Fall in love with its labyrinth of alleyways, canals, lagoon islands, and endless historic attractions and hop on a gondola if you want to explore the city from a different perspective.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Humana Zagreb. Donations help provide job opportunities and education programs in sustainable fashion and textiles for people with disabilities.

Is this trip right for you?
  • This trip is made for travellers who value their independence but also want the benefit of a local leader and a group of like-minded travellers. The itinerary has a mix of included activities and free time when your leader will offer suggestions. Please budget spending money for optional activities you want to partake in.
  • As accommodation on this trip is twin-share, single travellers will share a room with another traveller of the same gender. This trip is a great opportunity to get to know other like-minded people, so embrace it while you can. Keep in mind that hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together/apart. Rooms can be rather small, especially compared to American or Australian standards, and in most cases, bathroom facilities will be shared rather than ensuite. A single supplement is not available on this trip.
  • Summer temperatures can be very high in many regions visited (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s essential to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. Many European hotel rooms are not equipped with air-conditioning. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability for that season.

The trip had an interesting itinerary - every town we visited was fascinating in its own way. Plitvice Lakes and Lake Bled were gorgeous. Our group leader Sando had amazing knowledge of all our destinations and helped to develop a positive group dynamic.

This was a brilliant trip to a beautiful part of the world. The highlight for me was Lake Bled in Slovenia - absolutely stunning. As Slovenia was high on my wish list, it would be nice if Intrepid could find a way for the group to leave earlier in the morning on the travel day from Zagreb to Ljubljana, even if that meant taking a bus not a train. While Lucija helped us organise our time in the afternoon in Ljubljana and our day at Lake Bled, I’d already done everything I wanted to in Zagreb and would have liked more time in Ljubljana. Every other part of the itinerary was great. Although wet on the day we went, Plitvice Lakes were beautiful. What made this trip even better was having the lovely Lucija as our leader! Definitely recommend this trip.

I booked this trip last minute without expectations and I was nervous about accommodations. I ended up being very happy and satisfied. With exception of one accommodation being externally small space, everything else was great.

This trip was the perfect 'Basics' dive into the Balkan region. It was the perfect taste of Aegean Sea experience as well as the beautiful interior mountain towns you see in central Europe. There weren't alot of included activities which was expected and it allowed us to have tons of free time to do what we wanted. Highly recommended if you want to do more of your own exploring.
