Frequently asked questions
There are two ways to develop your photography skills during a polar expedition.
Onboard photography coach
Our professional photography coaches are on hand throughout your journey and are available to all passengers on every voyage at no additional cost. They'll offer advice and technical assistance while you're on deck and at onshore landings. They'll also host presentations to help you learn the most about photographing the unique polar environment.
There's no need to sign up in advance; the photography coach will be available throughout your entire trip.
Immersive Photography Program
Designed for more experienced photographers who want to make photography the focus of their voyage, this additional-cost program pairs you with a small group and a photography instructor. You'll take part in daily guided photography outings, as well as onboard workshops and image reviews to help refine your technique and develop skills.
Unlike the complimentary onboard coach, the Immersive Photography Program must be prebooked and comes at an additional cost. We recommend requesting info when you're booking your voyage to check availability and secure your place.
Our photography coaches have extensive photography experience shooting in polar regions. They'll share advice and techniques to help you make the most of the unique photo ops around you.
Topics may include
- Photography basics, including ISO, shutter speed and aperture
- Composition techniques
- Different camera settings and modes
- How to photograph wildlife
- Managing challenging lighting conditions
Your coach will also encourage you to explore all creative possibilities onboard the ship.
We recommend bringing a camera you're already comfortable using. Keeping your equipment simple and familiar means you'll spend less time adjusting settings and more time enjoying the scenery.
You may also want to bring:
- Extra memory cards
- Spare batteries or an additional charger
- Extra lenses or UV filters
- A lens cloth
- A waterproof camera case or dry bag
- A monopod, which can be more versatile than a tripod in polar environments
Not at all. Our onboard photography coaches welcome all skill levels and camera types, from smartphones and GoPros to point and shoot cameras and DSLR setups. Whether you're learning the basics or looking to experiment with more advanced techniques, your coach can help you get the most out of the equipment you already have.
Cameras can be sensitive to moisture, especially when combined with salty sea air, so it's important to keep your camera dry, especially when getting in and out of Zodiacs.
We recommend bringing a hard, waterproof camera case, but a dry bag can also work well. A small towel can provide extra cushion and help dry equipment when needed.
If you're travelling with expensive equipment, it's worth investing in suitable protection before your trip.
