Why you'll love this trip
  • Size up mighty Mt Kilimanjaro from the lush tropical surrounds of Marangu, as you prepare to ascend the incredible mountain with the help of an experienced climber.
  • Travel with experienced guides and porters. You'll be in great hands – with one guide for every two passengers – so all you’ll have to worry about is soaking up the scenery and keeping your footing!
  • Kilimanjaro’s changing scenery – magnificent rainforests and high-alpine deserts to ice fields and vast glaciers – is all on display as you tackle the trails to the top of Africa.
  • Catch a dazzling African sunrise from Stella Point on your way to summit Africa's highest mountain peak – definitely a rewarding experience after an early wake-up call!
  • Feel good knowing that you’re supporting an official partner of IMEC’s Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP). This means that all of our climbs have been assessed and scored based on a number of criteria, all of which are designed to ensure the proper treatment of porters.

Is this trip right for you?
  • A good level of fitness is required to join this tour. While the distances covered are not far, the effects of altitude will make it much harder than the usual uphill hike.
  • To allow for your body to adjust to the altitude the going will be slow. The speed of the hiking may be much slower than you are use too. However, we have found that this slow speed allows your body’s reserve levels to remain higher plus also allows for your body to adjust to the altitude as you walk.
  • Tried and tested all-purpose hiking equipment is required. Night-time temperatures can get very cold above 3500m so warm clothing and sleeping bag is essential. Hiring of equipment/sleeping bag is also possible.
  • Your safety comes first. All our guides and trek leaders have been trained by independent, UK-based medical specialists and are proficient in first aid. They also carry oxygen cylinders on all treks for emergency use.
  • Be prepared for dusty and therefore dirty conditions. It can be tough going hiking for continuous days without a shower. A dust mask, wet wipes and face washer may become your best friends.

The Machame route was really hard but rewarding. Angela was a fantastic guide, and I feel so privileged to have summited Kilimanjaro with her help. There was a medical emergency in my group, and the assistant guide, Walter, took excellent care of the person who was hospitalized with HAPE. This is critical, because navigating the Tanzanian medical system is tricky. The only things I think that could be improved: I would advise guests to bring their own sleeping bag. Borrow one if you have to. Because the new bags from Intrepid are incredibly thin. Also, I overpacked and could have brought quite a lot less stuff e.g. decanting into smaller containers for toiletries, etc. The Porters will give you hot water and soap every day so you can wash. There is also a dedicated chemical toilet available for this group.

The Intrepid Team made all the difference! Kilimanjaro was our toughest challenge, and it was only possible because the guides and crew were solidly in our corner and did everything conceivable to get us to our goal while caring for our needs.

What an amazing experience. The journey was incredible and the team really made it extra special. We had a superb chef, porters and guides led by the expert Rocky who has a brilliant knowledge of the mountain and always held safety as his number one priority. The summit night extremely challenging but was so well managed by Rocky, Walter & co with everyone making to the top!! Highly recommend.
