Why you'll love this trip
  • Explore the Serengeti National Park in depth – with two early-morning and two late-afternoon game drives through this spectacular wildlife arena, you’ll have the best chance to spot the Big Five.
  • Embark on an unforgettable safari across the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater in an open-roof 4WD with your small group for a chance to see the endangered black rhinoceros in full view.
  • Learn about the Maasai cultures, and join a local community for a guided afternoon stroll around the farming area of Mto wa Mbu, before enjoying a traditional meal together.
  • Swap the safari vehicle for two wheels on a guided biking adventure near Lake Victoria, stopping to shop for local wares and meet townsfolk at the Mwigobero Market.
  • Your expert local crew will keep you well informed (and well fed!) – filling you in on all you need to know about the Great Rift Valley and the annual migration of some two million wildebeest.

Is this trip right for you?
  • This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent (unless you’re on an Original or Comfort style trip), occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, and getting the best possible views of the Big Five. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The drive days can be long, but it’s as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/africa/overland
  • As the early bird catches the worm, the early camper sights the animals. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.
  • Some passengers will have been travelling together prior to the start of this trip. You may also want to check out The Masai Heartlands if you have more time to explore in East Africa.

Amazing trip! We got to see so many animals, and our group was fantastic. The team consisted of Tim, Wycliff and Jonah who really were a dream team! They worked together so well and made our group feel at ease. They were able to answer any questions and were extremely knowledgeable! Camping was fun, the tents were easy to set up and put away. Camping in the Serengeti is surreal as you can hear many wild animals as you drift off to sleep! Our game drives were very successful and we got to see both the big 5 and the ugly 5! Food was fantastic. My husband and I are veggie and there was no shortage of options for us. Thank you all.

This is a fantastic trip. I want to thank Tim Tim, Wycliffe and Jonah for giving me a fantastic holiday. They were all so friendly, capable, professional and inspired trust and confidence in their guests. The long drives were broken up by well timed breaks for toilets (always being brought to nice clean ones), snacks, ATMs. You might think they look arduous on the itinerary but in fact they flew by. Take this trip and make sure you book it with your 'camping hat' on, and make sure you bring the small things that make camping easy e.g head torch, light to hang in the tent, rapid-dry towel...you get the idea. This isn't a luxurious trip however the upsides are there to be had e.g. zebras, hyenas monkeys walking very close by and between your tents as you eat breakfast at dawn. I wasn't always impressed with the accommodation upgrade options, and if I were to go again I'd bring all things to make camping more comfortable as I said!

We went on this trip for part of our honeymoon. As we had a lot to prepare we forgot some essential things (yellow fever, Visa came lay for Tanzania) our guide Tim Tim helped us get access the boarder and made sure we where not ripped off. The knowledge and organisation from Tim Tim is amazing I’d definitely recommend this trip to anyone.
