What's Launceston weather like?
Launceston is full of natural beauty and historic buildings so it's little wonder that it's so popular among travellers, both domestic and international. Launceston's reasonably great weather all year round is a major drawcard of the area, as well as its stunning national parks and scenic wineries throughout the Tamar Valley.
The weather in Launceston is considered to be fairly mild, with the occasional sub-zero temperatures during the winter months. The average temperatures in Summer are around 25°C, making the weather not too hot or cold. Despite the temperatures remaining relatively comfortable throughout the summer months, the sun's UV rays can still be quite high so make sure to put on sunscreen before you step outside.
What's the climate in Launceston?
The climate in Launceston is considered to be a maritime one, and due to this city's geographic location at the northern end of Tasmania, it's likely to experience warmer (and less cold) weather than its southern counterpart, Hobart.
Because Launceston is nestled between mountain ranges, it hardly feels the effect of the Antarctic wind. This ensures there is little to no wind chill factor and that temperatures don't drop to a freezing level during the day. While winters in Launceston can be quite cold, on the other hand, summers in Launceston can be quite sunny and warm with January experiencing the hottest maximum temperature of around 26°C. January is also the month that is likely to see the least amount of rainfall, enjoying around 9 hours of sunshine per day.
What's winter like in Launceston?
Winter in Launceston runs from June - August and can be quite cold, even getting down to freezing temperatures overnight. It is also common during winter to experience extremely foggy mornings so be careful if you're out on the roads before 12 pm. Chances are, winter in Launceston will also be quite rainy as the month of July records the most days of rainfall with 17 days on average. This is followed by August with 16 days and June with 14 days.
The coldest months in Launceston are also the winter months with July's maximum temperature averaging around 11°C, closely followed by both June and August at 12°C. July also proves to be the coldest month when it comes to minimum temperatures in winter, sitting at a chilly average of just 3°C.
When's the best time to visit Launceston?
There really is no best time to visit Launceston as each month provides reasonably good weather, however, deciding when to travel to this naturally beautiful city largely depends on what kind of holiday you want to have. If you want to make the most of the great outdoors, hiking and bike riding your way along the Tamar River and through this city's luscious national parks then summer is a good season to go in, with a small amount of rainfall and warmer temperatures. While summer might enjoy great weather, it is also the peak season for travellers so the city is likely to be busier than usual.
If you want to avoid the crowds but still experience sunnier weather then travelling to Launceston in either March or November is also a good idea. While those months fall into the seasons of autumn and spring respectively, both months still enjoy temperatures with an average of 17°C and are less likely to experience rainfall than the other months in their seasons.
