Well, the cooler months – with their longer nights – will increase your chances of seeing their colours dancing across the sky.

This itinerary provides a starting point for what your Tailor-Made trip to Iceland in summer could look like. Treat it as inspiration, as each trip is created uniquely for you.

Hallo. Welcome to Iceland! You will be met on arrival and transferred from the airport to your centrally located hotel. There's time to freshen up then your local guide will meet you at your accommodation, welcoming you to Iceland. After a complimentary coffee and chat about the exciting days ahead, your Iceland adventure begins with a trip to the spectacular Reykjanes Peninsula which is famous for its rugged landscapes, black beaches, mountain lakes, hot springs, volcanoes, lava fields, and rock stacks. During summer, keep an eye out for the many different kinds of birds which fly around the cliffs.

Start your day at Thingvellir National Park, a geological wonder where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates pull apart to form the Silfra fissure. Divers come here to explore the crystal clear waters between this continental rift. There’s time for a stop at a geothermal bakery where pots of bread are dug out of the hot black sand and served warm with Icelandic butter. Spend a relaxing evening in the small town of Hella at Hotel Ranga, your home for the next two nights.

Catch a ferry to the Westman Islands where the main island, Heimaey, was almost destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1973. Visit the Eldheimar Museum and learn how the eruption destroyed hundreds of homes and lasted for months, making Heimaey the “Pompei of the North”. From here you can see the lava fields and new section of the island which increased in size by over 20 per cent due to the lava. Later in the day, head to the southern side of the island which is one of the best places in Iceland to view puffins in the summer months. At the end of the day, return to the mainland for another cosy overnight stay in Hella.

Begin your day by crossing the longest river in Iceland, the Þjórsá. As you pass the active Eyjafjallajokull volcano, look to your right to see the spectacular 60-metre-high Skogafoss waterfall. Admire the towering cliffs and mountains and view dramatic ice formations at the Solheimajokull glacier on a guided walk with an expert guide. On the way to your hotel, stop at a lava beach and Dyrhólaey, a vast rock formation with a hole in the middle, which is surrounded by breathtaking views of glaciers and towering lava sea stacks. Tonight you’ll spend the evening in Vik, the southernmost town in Iceland.

Enjoy a morning hike through Fjardrargljufur Gorge, one of the most beautiful gorges in Iceland, then drive to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon which is one of the world’s most extensive ice sheets. Stroll along the lake and see the ice floe's fantastic shades of colour before an overnight stay at a comfortable guesthouse.

Special information: Today’s walk is dependent on weather and local circumstances. If this walk is not possible, a suitable alternative activity will be offered.

In the afternoon, return to Reykjavik for a night spent exploring the capital's local drinking and dining scene or relaxing at your hotel before the journey home.

If you would like to stay longer, we are happy to book additional accommodation for you.
