Why choose Intrepid

Just for families
The clue’s in the title. These trips are for families only (including any aunts, uncles or cousins who’d like to come along, of course). As long as you’re travelling with a child under the age of 18, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, unlike other travel companies, children aged 17 years and younger receive a 10% discount off the price of their trip.

Travel with other families
Travelling the Intrepid way is a bit like travelling with a group of friends. These trips are made up of 3–5 like-minded families, and the kids tend to hit it off straight away, allowing you to enjoy some well-earned R&R. We often find the whole family ends up making friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.

Small group sizes
Intrepid’s family group sizes are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach some out-of-the-way places, but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.

Action packed
We know the biggest challenge on a family trip is keeping the kids entertained. So we’ve planned in advance. Nearly all of our hotels feature pools, and each day has a great mix of action-packed adventure and flexible free time. Your local leader can also suggest activities based on your kid’s hobbies or school curriculum.

Safety first
Our leaders are specially trained to run family adventures, so you’re well taken care of. You can also rest easy knowing we conduct safety assessments on all our activities to meet local standards as well as our own comprehensive safety policy.Â

Sustainable travel
We strive to use travel as a force for good. That’s why we choose to give back to the communities we visit, carbon offset all our trips and take our social and environmental responsibilities seriously. We’ve been officially certified as the world’s largest travel B Corp, which means when you choose Intrepid Travel, you can rest assured you’re travelling to improve the planet.
Highlights of our Australia family tours

See the mighty Uluru
Journey into the heart of the Aussie outback where the whole family will be amazed as you experience a Welcome to Country ceremony honouring the Luritja people, watch the shifting colours of Uluru at sunrise and sunset, and look for adorable hopping wallabies while hiking past giant red cliffs in Walpa Gorge. You'll also get to learn about the traditional food, medicine, art and languages of the Luritja people on a guided bushwalk.

Explore the Daintree Rainforest
Switch off and immerse your family in some of the world’s oldest tropical rainforest. Wind through leafy thickets on foot, enjoy a wildlife cruise on Cooper Creek and explore the deserted beaches of Cape Tribulation. The Daintree has been the land of the Kuku Yalanji people for over 50,000 years, and you’ll also get to learn how to fish the traditional way with a Kuku Yalanji guide using nothing but a keen set of eyes and a hunting spear. Who will be the first to catch dinner – you or the kids?

Discover the Kimberley
Head straight into the wilds of the Kimberley region to discover wildlife, waterholes and gorges galore. Wander through the impressive Tunnel Creek cave system and learn about its myths and legends, swim in lush natural pools, try your hand at creating First Nations art, and look for freshwater crocs (at a distance!) in Windjana Gorge. The fun continues when the sun goes down with marshmallows around the campfire as the Kimberley night sky comes alive in swathes of stars.

Traverse the Top End
Journey into the Northern Territory's rugged Top End and discover the wonders of Kakadu and Litchfield national parks. From spending time with the Traditional Owners of Wulna Country and cruising through the Mary River Wetlands, to cooling off in emerald-green pools fed by cascading waterfalls, these legendary landscapes and the fascinating wildlife that call it home make for a family holiday that’ll be hard to top.

Australia Family tour FAQs

Yes, there is a 10% discount on the price of trips for all children aged 17 and under.Â
Most of our trips have a minimum age of either 5 or 10 years old, depending on the physical demands of the itinerary. Check the Essential Trip Information for the minimum age required for each trip.Â
Trips with a minimum age of 5 are suitable for all ages, and we can even tell you in advance the age of kids already booked on that departure. Most of our child travelers are aged between 8 and 18 years old.
Just like our regular Intrepid trips, we like to have a blend of included activities and free time. Our itineraries often have planned activities in the morning followed by free time in the afternoon. Alternatively, if we have two full days of activities we follow it with a free day to allow you and the kids to spend time together and relax.
Our family trips are just that – for the whole family. That means you don’t have to leave aunties, uncles and grandparents at home. As long as there's at least one child under the age of 18 traveling with you, you’re a family group.
If your children are over the age of 18, our regular Intrepid tours are still a great way to enjoy the small group travel experience. Children over 18 years of age are considered to be adults and therefore cannot participate in an Intrepid Family Adventure unless traveling with a younger sibling and their parents.
We understand swimming is always a big draw for kids, so we try to use hotels, resorts and campsites with pools where possible. Depending on how far off the beaten track the itinerary wanders, there may not be hotels with pools nearby, but the great thing about many of our Australia trips is that we'll be visiting national parks and rainforests where you can swim in freshwater pools and waterfalls.
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
