Breathe Easy Breaks AU$100,000

After an amazing two months and a record number of Latin American bookings, Intrepid is excited to announce that our travellers raised a whopping AU$137,985.23 to help save the Amazon.

Apart from being a fantastic travel destination, the Amazon is also the lungs of the Earth, creating 20% of the world's oxygen and providing food and shelter to thousands of people. Unfortunately the Amazon is under threat as huge tracts of land are logged or burnt to make way for cattle grazing, soy farming and mining. For the months of February and March, Intrepid donated 10% of every Latin American booking to the Intrepid Foundation's Amazon Fund.

The fund will support projects by foundation partners, Greenpeace and WWF, that are working towards a sustainable future for the rainforest. Projects include, forest management and training of volunteers to protect the interests of river communities, supporting the commercialization of handicrafts produced by indigenous people as an alternative to logging and mining, supporting reforestation initiatives in indigenous territories, promoting sustainable forest industries, educating media and public on illegal logging activities. These projects will help educate and empower locals to choose the future of their land, encourage sustainable land use and help stop illegal deforestation of one of the most incredible places on Earth.

Both WWF and Greenpeace will each receive AU$68,992.61 towards their projects and we look forward to hearing about their progress in the months and years to come.

"The generous donations received with the help of The Intrepid Foundation's Amazon Fund allow us to continue the ongoing struggle to protect the crown jewel of the natural world," said Peter Brandis, WWF-Australia, Head of Corporate Partnerships.

Paulo Adario, Amazon Team Leader for Greenpeace says, "We are very grateful to the Intrepid Foundation for recognising the critical need to protect the Amazon rainforest and help forest-dwelling communities preserve their heritage. This generous donation will enable Greenpeace to continue our work with local communities and Indigenous peoples to prevent rainforest destruction and achieve positive and sustainable environmental change."

In the meantime, not only do Intrepid's travellers have an amazing opportunity to explore a fascinating continent, full of colour, life and excitement but they also travel knowing that their holiday is helping the world breathe a little easier.
