7 best destinations for solo travellers over 50

written by Marie-France Roy May 9, 2017

For many of us, the way we travel starts to change around the age of 50.

We enjoy spending longer in a place, while discovering its history and culture. We put more emphasis on comfort, more emphasis on a temperate climate, good food, decent infrastructure, and a variety of activities where there is little risk of breaking a bone.

Since we’re travelling alone, an affordable and safe destination is a must. And meeting people close to our age is a bonus. With that in mind, and with over 25 years’ experience adventuring solo, here are my top destinations for solo travellers over 50. (It’s worth mentioning that there are so many great destinations out there, but these are my favourite ones!)

Greece

Monastiraki Square Athens Greece

Bustling Monastiraki Square in Athens

As the birthplace of western civilisation and democracy, Greece’s history goes back thousands of years and is best discovered through the archaeological sites and museums dotted around the country. The climate is warm and sunny from April to October, which lets you enjoy the beaches on dozens of islands. Crete is my favourite for hiking and spring flowers.

Despite the lure of the islands, be sure to dedicate a few days to Athens (guide here). While the city appeared busy and chaotic during my first visit in 1993, I quite enjoyed strolling around and, more recently, using the expanded metro. Healthy and delicious food, friendly locals, as well as an older population (one person in five is over 65) round off the highlights.

Relevant trip: Enjoy a leisurely sail from Mykonos to Santorini on this 8-day Greek island adventure.

Portugal

Óbidos Portugal

Exploring the pedestrian village of Óbidos

Often-overlooked, Portugal will delight you. Travelling around this compact country is quick and easy. For example, you can go between Lisbon and Porto by train in less than three hours. Besides cities, Portugal’s draw cards include charming villages (check out Óbidos), castles and cathedrals, nearly 1,800 kilometres of coastline, and the picturesque Douro valley, famous for its wine. Be sure to catch a fado performance (traditional folk music) at À Capella in Coimbra, my favourite Portuguese town.

Feeling inspired?

Large food portions at restaurants help make the country surprisingly affordable (food guide here). Always ask for a ‘meia dose’ (half serving) unless you’re starving. Sample the best ‘pastel de nata’ (egg tart) at Pastéis de Belém, in its namesake suburb of Lisbon. Portugal also has an older population, compounded by the expat retirees who winter in the Algarve, when the average temperature is a mild 15°C

Italy

Italy Amalfi Coast

Italy’s Amalfi Coast

Just like Greece, Italy is rich in history and culture, and features one of the best cuisines in the world. By all means, visit the astounding art treasures in Rome and Florence and the canals in Venice, but also visit less well-trodden regions such as Puglia, Basilicata, Umbria, or Le Marche, to see a more authentic glimpse of the country. Italian trains are very affordable, although not always punctual.

If you like day hikes, stay in Cinque Terre for a few days and walk the easy coastal path between its five colourful villages (guide here). It may surprise you to learn that Italy has the second oldest population in the world, with 22.4% of people 65 or older. Thank that Mediterranean diet, and the relaxed attitude of its citizens.

Argentina

Marie on the Salinas Grandes, a large salt plain in Jujuy province, Argentina

Argentina is huge. I spent 12 weeks there and still haven’t seen everything. You can hike around lakes and up mountains, ride a boat to a glacier, see penguins, taste wines, admire some of the biggest waterfalls in the world, visit museums and churches, and shop until you drop. If you’re fascinated by the tango, spend time in sophisticated Buenos Aires. Catch a free performance on the street, buy a ticket to a show, or even take a lesson. Some schools like DNI Tango match you with different solo partners if you come on your own.

Avoid expensive flights by taking night buses, which are affordable, safe, and comfortable. Or choose to spend your time in one region. Go to Patagonia, the Lake District, and Iguazú Falls for superlative landscapes. Or escape the crowds in the pretty colonial cities of Córdoba and Salta. December to March is summer in Argentina, making it a great winter destination for North Americans.

Mexico

Los Viejitos Mexico dance

The traditional Mexican folk dance of Los Viejitos

If you’re solo, head to Mexico‘s Pacific Coast and the colonial towns of the highlands such as Oaxaca or Guanajuato (guide here). These places offer a little more authenticity than the Caribbean coast, which often caters to package tourists and couples (with prices to match). Mexico City is also reinventing itself as quite the cultured capital, with an exploding food scene that I’m a big fan of. Due to its altitude, the city tends to be cool and pleasant to stroll around.

Colourful, sunny, and very affordable, Mexico is home to various indigenous groups with their own foods, customs, handicrafts, and archaeological sites (Aztec, Maya, Mixtec, Zapotec, and more). Mexico is also home to some of the friendliest people I’ve come across. Add to this a large number of North American expats, especially in winter, and it isn’t hard to meet people.

Relevant trips: Consider Intrepid’s 15-day Best of Mexico trip, 9-day Mexico Real Food Adventure, or 9-day Playa del Carmen to Mexico City trip.

Laos

 Luang Prabang Laos

A sleepy street in the centre of Luang Prabang

Get away from the hordes of tourists and full-moon parties and visit underrated Laos. The gracious and reserved Lao people, orange-robed monks, and ornate Buddhist temples are reminiscent of Thailand, but without the crowds.

The peaceful town of Luang Prabang in the north makes a visit here especially relaxing. Take a boat trip on the Mekong, visit small villages further afield, or go for a hike in the beautiful countryside. The climate is also cooler and more comfortable than in much of south-east Asia.

Laos offers a distinct cuisine based on sticky rice (which you eat with the fingers). Try orlam (a thick soup with buffalo meat) or chicken skewers wrapped in lemongrass. You can eat for a couple of dollars at the street markets, but check out the Tamarind Café in Luang Prabang for something a little more upscale, and consider taking their cooking class.

Relevant trips: Opt for the 6-day Laos Discovery trip, 13-day Thailand and Laos Adventure, or 12-day Cambodia and Laos Encounter.

Japan

Temple Kyoto Japan

Kinkaku-ji temple in Kyoto, Japan

Where else do taxi drivers wear white gloves and meals can be ordered from a display of plastic food dishes? Japan feels different and exciting, but it is so clean, safe, and well-organised that you’ll easily find your way around – even if you don’t know a single word of Japanese.

Most hotels charge per person, not per room, meaning that you’re not penalised for travelling solo. Add to this the famous Japanese politeness and the delicious food, and you have a winner. Tokyo and Kyoto are the two cities you absolutely can’t miss. But the speedy and ultra-punctual bullet trains make travelling around the country a breeze. (You can find a 7-day guide to it here!)

In a country where the respect for elders is a tenet of the culture, more than 26% of people are over 65, making Japan the country with the oldest population in the world. Worth a visit just for how young you’ll feel!

Relevant trips: They range from food tours to cycling trips to 7-day Japan Highlights trips!

Hi Dee, I too am looking for a straight female travel partner. I’ve done a lot of solo travel but would like now to do a round the world trip, preferably not alone. CoViD has me thinking the best to get on the road as soon as it is safe. Please get back to me if you are interested in a RTW (round the world) trip.

I like how you explained that in Greece one out of every five people is over the age of 65 so if you’re over the age of 50 you’ll most likely find some older people to hang out with while traveling. I think this is a huge plus especially if you’re traveling alone. You could make new friends with the locals or fellow travelers of around your age.

I’m a fit, athletic 65 year old retiree from NYC who wants to go places and experience things that a typical tourist is probably not going to see with a tour guide. There’s no place in the world that doesn’t interest me, but it would be so much more meaningful to experience things with a like-minded person.

Hi Carole,
Malta is great for solo travelers, everyone speaks English, they Drive on the same side of the Road as the British, although the buses are very easy to navigate and very regular,
Not that expensive for a week ticket either
lots of expats, there it’s such a small island you can’t get lost.
Steeped in history so many churches, Mdina is a must either day Or evening both have great appeal.
My e mail address is 18branshill@gmail.com@gmail.com if you need any information just ask.
I too am a fellow Scot i traveled solo to Malta and ended up moving there for 7 years.
Now home in Bonnie Scotland and ready to try Spain Somewhere solo, hope i choose as well as i did with Malta lol

Be open minded and you’ll have the greatest experience. Grab a book about the common sense of DOs and DON’Ts of Thai culture and avoid people who ask you too many questions where you’re staying, how long, are you alone, or they can hook you up with traveling guides, for your own protection from scammer or con-artist.

Hi Alicia!
I just left TX after 28 years and a nasty divorce. Am now in NJ taking care of my 93 year old Mom. I’ll be 58 this year also. My brothers and I have a deal that whenever I feel I need a break, they will step up and look after Mom so I can relax.
The only problem is finding someone to go with! I’ve never traveled alone before, and I can’t say I’m looking forward to it until I found this site. I’m a RN, now private duty, (LOL) I love to read, walk, swim, ride bikes, bake, cook. I’m in pretty good shape, social drinker, and looking to make some new friends who like to travel!

So, here I am in Nha Trang, Vietnam, thinking that it would be great to share this experience with a fellow traveler. Not just anyone, someone that is like minded and shares same interests, value, beauty, and respects customs and cultures. Sometimes earths beauty needs to be shared to be remembered and appreciated. I am a senior male (72 yo) of Italian origin (Venice) living in Canada, that has been on a journey to discover this beautiful planet and all its beauty, for the past 50 years. The travel mate I am looking for should be youthful in mind, financially independent, fit, healthy in mind and body, and have a zest for travel.

I don’t know where you’re from but all European countries are safe. I’m from Ireland and I’ve traveled through most of Europe and never had any incidents . I travel regularly for work, am a similar age to you and I never tire of Europe cities and towns. If you’re not from Europe then go to Rome, Paris, London, Madrid, you got to see those places. If you’ve been there then go to Prague, Dublin, Brussels, Berlin. However, all the above will be expensive compared to the amazing value you can get in eastern European towns and villages. Go there, soak in the ambiance, culture, value for money and life experiences that they offer. Don’t be afraid, it’s all good!

Hello Peter
I am a “young” senior originally from the UK and have traveled some of Europe (inc: Venice) until relocating permanently to New Zealand and Australia several years ago. With the Pacific Islands on my doorstep I have visited most of them and more recently enjoyed South Africa (especially the Safari) and have just returned from India.
I am an independent widow with solo travel experience who would love to make my next destination Canada with a resident tour guide. My Visa’s for USA & Canada are current and if you are at all interested, I should love to hear from you. Sincere regards……….Jackie.

I have a group of female friends, and we travel on a big trip every year as a small group of 6-12. We are all females ages 45-72, all health care professionals from Canada. We are either single, married (but husband doesn’t like to travel), divorced or widowed. We have been on a safari in Africa, travelled to Vietnam and Cambodia with a Mekong River cruise between countries, and most recently travelled to India and Nepal in December 2018. We are planning a trip to Egypt and Jordan in October 2019 and are looking for 4 more people to join our private tour in Jordan from Oct 24-Oct 31, 2019. Our Egypt tour is full but there is another Egypt tour that would work before or after our Jordan trip. One of the ladies is also looking for a travel partner to go onto Israel after our Jordan tour. If you are a laid back woman with an adventerours spirit, who enjoys experienceing new places & cultures and meeting new people, with some fun, laughter and wine thrown in then please email me for more details of our Jordan trip.
Cheers, BJE

RTW (round the world) is something I’ve not yet done and would love to so am looking for a group of women who might be up for the adventure. If you are interested please let me know. New places, new cultures, new people, with some fun, laughter and wine thrown in sounds good to me!

I am a youthful 60+, more like active 50 something in Nassachusetts, US. And am looking to travel with companions. I am retired, curious, and eager to do budget bucket list travel Currently trying to formulate a Feb/March trip somewhere warm, perhaps to Mexico (Baja Sur, or Oaxaca, and coast) although New Zealand is on my bucket list. I’d like to also to go to Bali and Peru with Macchu Picchu perhaps later this year. Portugal and Spain are favorite destinations. I am challenged by choosing among all the amazing possibilities so joining with another experienced adventurer and good planner would be helpful. I love to dance, tango, salsa, swing, hike, bike, snorkel, and explore towns, meeting local people and taking photographs. Good conversation and wine. Quieter Inner focused time with yoga and meditation is also important. Seeking balance. How do we connect safely and continue conversation from here ?

I agree, I’m very active and love any type of active adventure. I’ve trekked Machu Pichu, Everest and had some amazing cycling adventures. Its getting harder to find people that are interested in active trips. Other companies that specialize in “senior” tours think that youre made of money and charge a fortune, plus theyre not very adventurous, too laid back. Would love to find an adventurous soul who is willing and able to travel extensively, not luxuriously.

Yes! I am about to turn 71. Hiked the Inca trail to Macchu Picchu for my 70th. I am retired, single, adventurous, don’t have a lot of money. I’m thinking about walking the Camino de Santiago in September 2019 – Because I haven’t been to Spain, its safe for a woman alone, a nice degree of physical challenge, and affordable.

But I am open – I want to fit in as much travel and adventure as I can before I turn 80! ( I had a friend who was still traveling the world and jumping horses at 89. But who knows?)

I traveled for a year in 2008, both in groups and by myself. Started in Thailand, then to Cambodia, Vietnam, Nepal,India, Kasmir, Australia Perth &SW, Adelaide, New Zealand both islands All were Great and I Found the people everywhere friendly, helpful and pleasant. Stil on my list is China, Mongolia. I lived in Sydney for 5 years which is great, beautiful, friendly but expensive. The most beautiful #1 New Zealand, Nepal, flying along the Himalayas from Delhi to Srinagar in Kashmir, you could see 250 miles into the Himalayas from 40k feet for four hours, magnificent!! Sadly much of the ancient temples in Katmandu were destroyed in the big Earthquake a couple of years ago. The people are really sweet and helpful. I plan on going travelling again next summer

Reply
Monica February 1, 2018 - 5:49 am

Hi Sharon

Travelling by train round Portugal is easy and cheap. I live in Edinburgh but have a holiday home on the Algarve and often get flight to Lisbon then train to Faro. It is a beautiful scenic journey taking around 3 hours which can cost around 11 Euro if you book in advance. Next time I go over there (end of February) I plan to get the train from Lisbon to Porto and stop off at places on the way. Later this year I’m intending to spent longer and get train over to Spain as well. Check out the website http://www.cp.pt where you can plan your journey and book tickets. It is easy to use.

I can talk to anyone, so I don’t think having things to discuss would be an issue or getting along with people. Just feel kinda different even contemplating it. I am contemplating tropics, I love the sun! 50 y/o single female of 7+ years.

Hi Trina

I recall being on a beach on the Algarve one Christmas a couple of years ago. I got chatting to an elderly couple from Sweden and when I told them I was holidaying on my own they were astonished. They asked me “do you not get lonely?”. I replied I may be alone but I never get lonely. Reason is so many lovely people chat to me when I am on my own yet when I’m with a friend it is not so easy. So relax, enjoy your trip, smile and say hello to someone and you will not be lonely.

Scott February 8, 2018 - 4:06 am

Hi Trina…well, the first solo Europe trip was to Croatia, and I got lonely one day. But that was it. Ever since then I’ve gotten used to the solo journeys. I’m also finding I’m making new friends. As far as safety and getting around, simply using your instincts and being prepared will keep you feeling confident and comfortable.

Guatemala is a wonderful country, when you arrive in Guatemala City go right away to Antigua, if you join a Spanish School
and have a Home Stay, they will pick you up. The cost is very low. The Internet has a lot of info. on the web site.
Lake Atitlan is great, the hotels are also reasonable, there is van or bus service from Antigua. I love Antigua and stayed 4 weeks
in February 2 years ago and will go back this spring. I feel very comfortable and safe there, I am a solo traveler and I am 75 years old. Go for it, happy travels, Edda

Last year did Intrepid tours to Thailand , Laos , Vietnam , Cambodia and Myanmar, all of which were wonderful. The tour groups were all filled with people from lots of different countries and of different age groups , yet we all got along very well and ere looked after brilliantly by the Intrepid guides . I would highly recommend any of those tours .

Hi. I’m planning a trip to India in November too. I’m 60. My boyfriend doesn’t have any interest in India or even in traveling in general; so I’ll be solo. I will be doing a 10-day group spiritual retreat in Rishikesh and I’m contemplating signing up for the 8-day Intrepid Traveler tour around Delhi before or after. Would you like to have a conversation about traveling to India?

Reply
Alvena June 4, 2019 - 9:09 pm

Hi, I have been to rishikesh, it’s wonderful. I don’t like Delhi much. Maybe tours to destinations would be fine and to hotel again. It’s noisy, smelly and way too busy in Delhi for me. It’s lovely and cool up there in Rishikesh, and high in oxygen and great vibes!
Try to avoid train travel. Planes are good.
Have a wonderful time. Cheers alvena

Would love to have a travel buddy and suggestions of places to go – it’s a very large country. Hi Rebecca. It seems like the people in their 50’s and 60’s who are posting on this thread seem to like the idea of travelling with others in this age group. Is Intrepid missing an opportunity to appeal to older folks? I’m in my 60’s and it would be appealing to know that there are other active people my age on the Intrepid tour that I pick. #ActiveSeniors

Hi Janet

I’m 53 years young and find myself solo after being with my fella for 21 years!! Happy to join you on your travels if you want company. There’s loads of places in the world I still want to see and I too don’t want to waste any more time after recovering from cancer this year so I’m making 2018 the year I tick a few places off the list. I was actually researching the idea of a yoga retreat in South Goa when the email came through from Intrepid about solo travel – how spooky is that!!!

Hi Jane, I went on the Getaway Trip with Intrepid to India in December 2017. There was 15 people in the group and the trip leader as well. This was my 2nd trip with Intrepid, first one was to Vietnam. Both trips were great and I never felt lonely or alone whilst with the group, it was a lot of fun and I am 60 so go for it.

Reading all these comments from different places in the world it would be great to set up, similiar to house swap, a group of international people who provided accommodation to solo travellers in their homes at no cost and the visitor would offer the host a bed in their home if they wanted to visit their country. What do you think?
Also a divorcee with adult kids, took a while to adjust to solo travelling but now luv it. Acommodation can be quite expensive. Also you would be getting local knowledge.

Hi Vicki – yes, I loved Jordan which I did as part of an Intrepid small group tour. Highlights were sleeping under the stars in Wadi Rum, Petra which I love, love, love. The dead sea, mud bath and floating on top of the water is a really weird sensation. We also explored Roman Ruins and had a pretty good look around. I have travelled quite a lot and Jordan was right up there for me. Chris

As a 71-year-old solo female traveler, I have traveled to Africa three times in the past three years. Twice I have joined small-group overland safari groups (no more than 12 clients, but there have been less both times I have gone) in order to get a feel for the countries and then I strike out on my own. Depending on how you want to travel and what type of accommodations you want is the first thing you need to decide. If you have specific questions, I may be able to help you. There are many lodges in the delta—all of them fairly expensive. Camping is also possible, but I would not recommend driving on your own in the area unless you are well-versed in 4-wheel driving (and even then, sometimes you get stuck and roads become impassable in the rainy season).

Traveled to Norway as a solo, on my own, stayed in AirBnBs (much less expensive that hotels, and you can meet locals). I would recommend that country. Also went on a river cruise alone (not cheap, but no single supplement) in Netherlands and Belgium during tulip season that was great. Travel by myself to Hawaii (different islands) each year, and again, have found AirBnB a good way to avoid the high costs and impersonal big resorts. I go annually to an eco-resort near Zihautanejo (Mexico) on my own which is lovely; great food, beautiful scenery, nice people. As far as tours, I have an upcoming Road Scholar trip to Costa Rica, and a South African safari in 2018. It does take some work to find trips were they don’t kill you will single supplements, but it can be done.

Reply
Don June 24, 2018 - 7:16 am

Hello Kathy. I’d be interested to know the name of the river cruise company that you used in Netherlands and Belgium that doesn’t charge a single supplement. I’m a single traveler and constantly run into this problem.

Wow, just reading through all the comments quickly I must say , a travel agent should out together some singles trips for people over 50 that just don’t want to travel alone so much. Say something domestic that is affordable would be a good start, or a weekend cruise that is for adults, not seniors, and not party kids. you know what I mean. I would love to join in on a 50 something singles trip in the us to start, maybe a cruise.

I’m presently in Cotonou, Benin, W.Africa solo! 69 and twice a widow, finally doing a trip alone. However, I’m looking for suggestions for a “Trip of a Lifetime ” to take with my three adult daughters, now all in their 40’s. They all work and have young families, so finding time to get away is so limited. They can only squeeze in 7-10 days at most. We’d like Far East or something out of the ordinary yet safe in these scary times. We’re all healthy, active and enjoy outdoor activities.

Vietnam, but take time to understand it before you go. Hanoi, then Danang or Dalat. Off the tourist trail people will ask how old you are. This is so they know how to treat you. If you are as old as their mother or grandmother you command high respect. If you are the same age then calling you older sister is a sign of respect. The woman’s museum in Hanoi is worth a few hours.
The first females to lead an army to victory against the chinese was in 47AD.
Quang An is the mother and provider to all veit people. Ancestor worship is huge.
We spent 10 months there on holiday after visiting for 2 months a few years ago. We had only planned to stay 2 weeks initially.

It’s much easier now. Have a landing spot for the first few days. That let’s you get the jetlag behind and let’s you start slow. It can be a pain with the young crowds home away and just want to party. The single supplement can cost more so find a friend. Go on a tour where everything is taken care of. Have fun and go.

How about some ideas for the non-wealthy people over 50? Not sure where this article was written, but how about some places within the U.S.?

Reply
Chris Putro July 25, 2017 - 11:13 pm

Intrepid is affordable for non-wealthy people. A 2-week tour typically costs ~$4000, including tour price, airfare, insurance, incidentals and food & drink. But I drink a lot, so maybe less than that for most people. I’ve been to 48 countries on a middle-class income. Intrepid is meant for people like us. 🙂

Reply
Freda August 14, 2017 - 10:26 pm

$4000 ,I consider that a price for a rather wealthy person. I’m a retired

I am 63, single and wish that I could afford to travel! Was thrown away after 30 years by a husband that preferred other women. Sure thought that my retirement years were planned out.

Hope you are ok. What is it with all these couples divorcing after all the years of history and kids. Unbelievable. Men are very selfish, in my opinion!

Sometimes, like in my case, the woman left for another man. I was left that way and raised 3 kids by myself. The youngest just graduated from college. It was difficult but worth it. They love and respect me and that makes me happy. I am 59 now and it took 19 years to reach this point but life is good. Unfortunately, they don’t have much to do with her anymore.

Mirror image Chris ! Mine split with another women when I was 12 weeks pregnant with our youngest child. Raised the 3 kids solo and the youngest is just about to graduate from high school! They don’t want much to do with their dad either these days. I’m extremely proud of who my kids have become and after many years of hard times am at last able to do some travel. I’m 52. Did a trip to Thailand and Cambodia volunteering earlier this year on my own but with a group tour and had a ball! I now cant wait for the adventure! There should be like a Facebook page or an online community for us all …so many of us in similar circumstances….. just getting some our time at last and finding ways to enjoy it !

I’ve been there too, 55, going through a divorce and just diagnosed with bc. I took one day at a time and looked for anything to be grateful for.

Hi Cheryl

I’m in a similar situation to others on this post. After 22 years finally realised need to move on from my fella. Going through thyroid cancer treatment at the same time but really need to get out there and travel as life is way too short. Maybe we’ll meet somewhere in this small world.

Planning a trip to Iceland in September 2018. Took an island tour of Ireland last September. For my 50th, I celebrated in a new resort in Cancun, Mexico. I manage to plan a big trip with a few stateside trips each year. Life is too short, take the travel plunge, splash or make waves! I also like to drive the coastlines, California in a Corvette with the top down. The Florida Keys, I was frugal, but the scenery was fabulous. I am driving to Florida to pick up a travel trailer. I believe I got the better end of my divorce, I travel more single, now 52. I love to journal my adventures. As a freelance writer and photographer, I want to share my frugality travel tips. Tip 1, piggyback destinations, find a hub to stay for part of the trip, then venture out on various short trips. Example: Ireland is a great hub, then head to Paris, Italy or England. These short roundtrip fares are cheapest while in Ireland. While in Ireland, I stayed with a local family in a small town using public transportation and a lot of scenic walking. Absolutely amazing 2 weeks in Ireland… happy trails to all!

I spend month of January in the Yucatán area, flying cheaply through Cancun airport. So much to see and do. Feel very safe there and love the fresh foods.
After separation, I will be traveling solo this year and look forward to embracing the opportunity to meet many others.
Would love an inexpensive group benefit way to travel and gets best prices.

I am the same — a freelance writer, solo traveler over 50. I’m in Hungary for the summer, and will do a river cruise from here to Amsterdam. I love Hungary, and always travel solo. BTW, want a sunny place with great coffee — besides Budapest– in the US try the Nature Coast of Florida. I was living there for 18 months, and it is undiscovered Old Florida beauty. Quiet, clean–kayaking, hiking, birding, and good beer and coffee, fruits and veggies. and BBQ.

Traveled 4 months is SE Asia recently after spending 2 months in Panama, Bocas del Toro where I have property and also live part of the year. The high point of my travels was north Viet Nam this trip. I was in south VN 3 years ago but the north is totally different and the people were wonderful. Viet Nam is very inexpensive and very safe. My favorite spot was Sa Pa in far north VN and I almost bypassed it b/c the weather was cool almost cold and some rain. That would have been a great loss. Sa Pa is my favorite spot in SE Asia and I normally travel to Asia to scuba dive. I want to return July 2018 to see the terraced rice fields when everything is green and visit some friends I made there. If you get to VN Hoi An is a definite must see. Hoi An is the most photogenic city I have ever been in. Also, don’t miss an afternoon visit to Jack’s cat cafe while there. Da nang is a must see also. Da Nang is a tourist destination all it’s own with many great beach hotels and a totally artsy and visitor friendly city. Check out Hoa’s place on the beach near marble mountain. He has some great stories about the war years and he is the real deal. I love to travel by train in VN, very cheap and great fun and comfort. I also visited Thailand and The Philippines this trip but missed Laos which was on my list but lost some travel time due to a minor but possibly serious scuba injury. On my next visit I will see Laos. If anyone wants info. I will share the little I have. BTW, you will love Hanoi. I plan to travel more in So. America in early 2018 after seeing Colombia and Ecuador 2 years ago. I want to get to Argentina, Bolivia, Chili and Peru.

I am retired and a good traveller, 72 but in good health still. Are there a lot of retirees in Boca del Toro? Panama I hear, is a great place to live for retirees.

Over 50? With all respect to your article, I’m over 50 just did did a two week 80 mile Mt Everest trek in the Himalayas at elevations above 18,000ft. Next month, an extreme Ironman distance triathlon in Alaska. I reject the idea that “Over 50” means we should seek comfort travel and temperate climates. Some of us will to continue to push our physical and mental limits, while others sit around and get old. Age is in your mind.

Deb, I was the same way after finding myself single in my 50’s! I took the plunge and have taken several cruises by myself and have never had a problem meeting up with other solo’s and making friends. In October I am going on my first solo European cruise and I can’t wait! I think that for me, cruising feels safer, at least for now while I build up my confidence. Good luck and happy travels!

Sharlene- I am about to head to Kenya on a medical mission with Project Helping Hands. Im a registered nurse, 52 and single, and often travel alone. My best trip was 4 months traveling through New Zealand. I find that you often meet more people when you are alone. I do appreciate sharing the adventure with others however. There are advantages both ways, but I’m always open to a travel buddy that wants to go where I want to go. I get 5 weeks paid vacation every year, sometimes more, so even with a full time job, extended trips are possible. Thailand, Italy, Barcelona, Peru and others are still on my list…

It is truly a global cosmopolitan capital.
