An assortment of galleries, theatres and lively central plazas set among San Jose's glitzy modern shopping malls make this one of Central America's most consistently surprising capitals. Get to know the main sites - and little known secrets - of this bustling metropolis on a guided orientation walk. Stop by the city's rambling Mercado Central to witness the varied range of goods and handicrafts on offer.
Enjoy the thick forests, cool waterways and pristine, powdery beaches of the Tortuguero National Park. An optional canoe trip or canopy tour offers a different perspective on this amazing, precious ecosystem.
Journey to Sarapiqui, a small city surrounded by the lush green forests and banana plantations of Costa Rica's northern lowlands. Opt to explore the surrounding jungle by mountain bike or on foot, listen to the twittering of the local birdlife or indulge the old sweet tooth on a tasty chocolate tour.
Venture out to Santa Rosa de Pocosol and spend the night in a local homestay. Just down the road, visit the incredible Juanilama agricultural community, the perfect place to hang out with the locals. Get your hands dirty helping out with chores around the farm, catch fresh fish for dinner and learn the best ways to cook them, Santa Rosa de Pocosol style.
A sleepy little town set against a truly awesome backdrop, La Fortuna makes an exciting base from which to explore this beautiful region. When the day's thrillseeking activities are wrapped up, why not soak up the incredible views of Arenal Volcano from the Baldi Hot Springs.
Travel through the mountains to Monteverde and head out on a guided tour through the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Lush, green and jam-packed with colourful butterflies and exotic creatures, it's a nature lover's paradise.
Descend from the mountains to the small beach-side hub of Quepos, located on the Pacific coast. Hit the turquoise water for some kayaking, fishing, swimming or surfing, or just bliss out on the beautiful local beaches. When the sun sets, take an opportunity to hit the lively bars and clubs for some local mingling.
Return to San Jose and get to know this busy city on your own terms - shop for souvenirs at local artisan booths, catch a show at the Teatro Nacional, or tuck into some scrumptious local fare on a final dinner with the group. After reliving the memories of this Classic Costa Rica adventure, another night of escapades in this energetic capital could well be on the cards.
