How do I get to Glacier National Park?

If you travel from other states or from overseas, the park conveniently has its own airport — Glacier Park International Airport (FCA), located in Kalispell, MT. Just a handful of cities in the US have direct flights to FCA (Seattle, Salt Lake City, Denver and Phoenix, to name a few), but park visitors can still easily reach the airport from other major cities with a layover or two. The airport is expanding its range of direct flights as the park's popularity continues to grow.If a road trip is more your vibe, Glacier NP is about a 10-hour drive from both Seattle and Portland, 4 hours from Spokane, and 3 hours from Calgary, AB.For the most scenic route to the park, you can hop aboard Amtrak's Empire Builder train that travels from Chicago to Seattle, stopping in East Glacier, West Glacier and Whitefish.

When is the best time to visit Glacier National Park?

The best time to visit Glacier National Park to experience the widest array of activities is between July and September. The Going-to-the-Sun Road is typically fully open by early to mid-July, and most of the hiking trails will be accessible and snow-free. Wildflowers bloom in August, giving the mountainsides a vibrant wash of color.

What to pack for a trip to Glacier National Park

If you plan on hiking in Glacier, you'll need a sturdy pair of well-fitting hiking boots, a mixture of waterproof layers, a water bottle or bladder and a camera.         Known as one of the most spectacular scenic drives in the US National Parks system, the Going-to-the-Sun Road takes you into the heart of Glacier. The 53-mile route travels over the Continental Divide, with a stop at Logan Pass, the highest drivable point in the park.         The awe-inspiring landscape of Glacier National Park was carved by ice thousands of years ago, and today, 25 active glaciers still remain in the park. Unfortunately, the effects of climate change are plentiful within the park, and the glaciers are rapidly shrinking. The NPS is putting forth the effort to reduce its contribution to climate change, but you can always do your part by staying on established trails, carrying a refillable water bottle and, as always, leaving no trace.

        Glacier has over 700 miles of hiking trails within the park, so whether you're an expert trekker or an outdoor newbie, there will be a trail for you. More popular routes include the easygoing Trail of the Cedars and the moderate Iceberg Lake Trail, which can end with a chilly plunge into the pale blue iceberg-dotted waters if you're daring enough. Experienced hikers might want to conquer the challenging Grinnell Glacier Trail to get up close to the park's most famous glacier.

Stunning scenery. Great fun. If you get Mikael for your tour guide, you're in luck. You are camping and moving around fairly quickly so you're gonna be exhausted by the end of it but that's all part of the fun.

This was an amazing trip, filled with many memories and beautiful friends from around the world! Everything about this trip was made so easy thanks to the tour guide. He was very calm but also got the group excited for adventures. In terms of the itinerary, it was awesome! We were able to see a lot in 2 weeks. There were additional activities that we could pay for, but the guide took us to heaps of hikes and joined us on all of them! There were some long days of driving but I actually found it quite relaxing. The trip is pretty full on - having to set up camp every time we moved location and doing lots of hikes, so the long van days are sometimes really nice to get a snooze in. The guide cooked amazing food, even when we had to pack food into the canoe for the overnight trip, he still made the BEST DISH OF THE WHOLE TRIP - salmon and pesto pasta. It says meals are not included in the price, however we paid a small “Kitty” and that covered nearly all meals except for when we were in town, or got extra hungry - which was rare. The also included some traditional Canadian foods, such as poutine, Nanaimo bars and some others. The camping lifestyle was really fun! I have not had experience camping for 2 weeks so this was brand new! It was quite cold in the morning and sometimes through the night but as soon as fire bans were lifted, we had a fire going on the morning and before bed. I would recommend bringing a sleeping bag liner or blanket to help with the cold nights. The trip was incredible, I would highly recommend doing this. Everything is taken care of and the only thing I had to do was TRY and take in all the incredible views.

I can highly recommend this trip! The organization is excellent and with the local guide you get a very deep impression and knowledge about the region. A special highlight of this trip was the canoe trip to a lonely bay! Enjoying the time without zivilisation is an amazing experience!
