Is this trip right for you?

  • This trip is operated and run by our trusted partner, Kimberley Wild Expeditions. You will be travelling with a mixture of both Kimberley Wild Expeditions customers and Intrepid customers. Intrepid has worked very closely with Kimberley Wild Expeditions to ensure that all of our customers will enjoy their time away, and experience all that the region has to offer.

  • This itinerary involves some clambering over rocks, wading in water by torchlight, walking on rocky creek beds that are unstable underfoot and ascending/descending into gorges. The ability to swim and a reasonable level of fitness and being sure on your feet is required to participate.

  • Western Australia is a big state, so travelling significant distances is necessary to fully experience the highlights. You will soon discover that they are well worth the journey.

  • Camping really is the best way to experience the Kimberley - connect with nature and leave less of a footprint. Camping in Kimberley National Parks involves dome tents (single/twinshare), swags with fitted sheets & pillows with pillow cases. On site amenities include hot showers and flush toilets.

Welcome to Broome! After meeting up with your new travel companions and group leader, you’ll begin our Aussie Outback adventure and hit the wide, open road, heading east toward Fitzroy Crossing. You’re in for a real treat – expect to cruise by richly-coloured cliffs that tower above, carved by floodwaters of the nearby Fitzroy River. Rise and shine! After breakfast today, pack up camp and wave goodbye to Fitzroy Crossing, heading toward the Wunaamin Miliwundi Ranges. These ranges soar up to almost 1,000 metres at their highest, this area features epic sandstone mountains and granite outcrops. Keep your eyes peeled during the drive and really soak up this typical Western Australian landscape. Our first stop is at Tunnel Creek – a cave system carved through the limestone of Napier Range. You’ll learn about this fascinating place, once part of an ocean reef system some 350 million years ago, as you walk through the tunnel that reaches up to 20m high and 15m wide in some parts. Look up in awe as stalactite rock formations cling from the cave walls and rays of light pierce through from above. You’ll also learn the intriguing story of the legend of Jandamarra, an Aboriginal freedom fighter who used the tunnel as a hideout in the late 1800’s. This afternoon, set up camp in Windjana Gorge National Park and spend some time exploring this impressive area, searching for local wildlife – like crocodiles and native birds – and bushtucker. Tonight, tuck into another campfire dinner under the starry night sky. Cheers, mate!

After breakfast at camp, hit the globally recongised Gibb River Road (AKA the iconic journey of Australia). Gaze out the window and be mesmerised by the diverse landscapes on this drive – you could be treated to lush river gorges one minute and vast open plains the next. Our first stop is just off the Gibb River Road at Adcock Gorge, a picturesque pool and small waterfall surrounded by rainforest and sandstone ranges. From here, we’re off to Galvans Gorge for a refreshing afternoon dip among waterlilies and boab trees that cling to the water's edge and offer pleasant shade from the Outback sun. This evening, set up camp at Mt Barnett Cattle Station alongside a sweet billabong oasis.
