To the Intrepid Travel community,  

I hope you are staying safe and well during this unprecedented time for our industry – and our world. The COVID-19 pandemic has uprooted our lives, and our business, in ways we simply never could have imagined. 

For over 30 years, Intrepid has faced a number of obstacles that have disrupted tourism – from global recessions to terrorist attacks and other widespread health emergencies. Throughout each instance we have always tried our hardest to power through with care for our customers and community.  

For the past several weeks, our team at Intrepid Travel have focused on nothing but our people: our staff, our community, and you, our customers. While we have not been perfect, we have done our best to act with empathy.  

Since this situation began escalating, we’ve met each day to discuss where our travellers were in the world, how we could support them and help get them home safely. Beginning with over 3,000 travellers abroad in early March, our global operations team worked around the clock to bring that number down dailyI’m happy to share that the majority are now home and those who remain are in touch with their governments and on their journey home soon.  

Throughout this time, we’ve seen the power of kindness shine through – from stories of our Intrepid leaders opening their own homes to our customers to the generosity of our partners who have opened their closed hotels to house our leaders.   

For now, on behalf of all of us at Intrepid, we want to extend a sincere thank you for your patience and support in a time of great uncertainty. It is appreciated, now more than ever.  

In the coming months Intrepid will set out to find impactful ways to support our entire value chain, starting with an initial commitment of setting up a Community Recovery Pledge in partnership with The Intrepid Foundation. This will support our vulnerable communities as they recover and rebuild their sustainable tourism products.  

Intrepid Travel is resilient, much like our customers, and we are ready and eager to spend the next 30 years showing you this amazing world once it is safe to do so.

We are grateful for the kind thoughts and encouragement shared by many of you and have reached out to any travellers with cancelled trips directly to discuss their situation.

Thank you all for your amazing help, especially to your leader Pablo from Guatemala, he ensured our safety all the way to Panama. He kept in touch with all of us until we arrived safely back in our home country.

It’s obviously a difficult time for everyone – communities , local businesses and especially the wonderful tour guides who work and represent you across the world. Have you been able to provide any income support for these guides during the period that they are unable to work. Is there any central plan for past travellers to donate as I am sure many would want to help?

We hope during this time of trouble that Intrepid Travel is financially helping their tour guides around the world. Many of them must live from paycheck to paycheck. We want to see all of them able to return to guiding when tours commence. They are the heart of the company and always ensure that new customers become regular customers because of their skills.

My husband and I were halfway through a ” Egypt and Jordan in Depth ” tour . Jordan closed their borders so we all had to go home . Our tour guide in Egypt said he had talked to head off ice and ensured our group we would be getting a full refund for the Jordan leg of the trip . Now after talking to Peregrine office in Melbourne , Australia we have been told we will be getting a credit and NOT a REFUND as initially told . We took this holiday at this time as my husbands health is not the greatest so I’m not sure if we can wait till later to take advantage of the proposed credit . I feel we are entitled to a refund , just as we were initially advised by the tour guide , who was your companies representative in Egypt . Judy & Peter Rykmans Booking Number : 6084381

Hats off to a first class organization.I recently returned just before the outbreak from a group tour thru Cuba that was outstanding in all regards.My next trip with you was to be next month to Peru that obviously was cancelled. I was very disappointed with your Customer Service team when I had to cancel my trip to Vietnam. I did it on 2/29. A day or two before I was to leave because my flight though S. Korea got canceled. The Rep told me he could only refund 50%, and the other 50% would remain as a credit for future travel. I will likely rebook this trip after everting blows over but for Intrepid to tie my money up like this when I need it to eat and pay bills is very unfair and bad business!!!!

Wow ….You have a Chief Customer Officer , where have you been hiding for the last month. This is the first communication of any sort since the 16th March and tells us what we all know. No insight into refunds of course as Intrepid has consistently failed to communicate what people want to know and changes what it says on the run. Your integrity and competence as an organisation is seriously at question. I have engaged with your help desk and made my views clear and of course all I get is glorious silence.

Leigh, I had just arrived in Madrid for what was supposed to be a 4 week Intrepid holiday. A representative organised a meeting at the hotel basically telling us to get the hell out of Dodge, Spain was about to into lockdown. Which I did am eternally grateful for travelling with Intrepid. Be proud of the company you have built.

I am now 70 years of age and my passport needs renewing. In the positive spirit of Intrepid I am going to renew my passport, and look forward to the time I will start exploring the world again. Lessons to be learned. I am sure these are very difficult times for Intrepid, and I don’t intend making it worse. However, we were on the 7 March Rajistan tour, but cancelled three days before – despite Intrepid assurances that all was well – given the rapidly worsening Covid crisis and cancellation of our onward flights to Taiwan, which we took as an indicator of where travel was going.
As is turned out we were correct, and Intrepid incorrect, and our NZ government summoned everyone home well before the end of the tour on the 24th.
I’m quite sure that by the 24th you had either cancelled the tour, or at least had had some desertion by travellers. I hope no one became sick there or on the way home.
So, you were clearly tardy in cancelling this tour, and I’m sure others. I suspect, in the end, this has cost you, though you banked most of our trip cost.

Thank you so much! We were on our 16th trip with intrepid when the borders started to close around us in Guatemala. Intrepid and our guide went above and beyond all expectations to get us all safely across the border so we could get home! Our guide has stayed in contact with us the whole time, checking everyone is home, safe and still well. We will certainly be back when this is all over. Well done intrepid!

Good letter. I would love to hear from you guys about proposals for say early next year if not even earlier. I know that the hardship so many will face for a long period will be extreme. But I believe and have faith in the fact that in 6-9 months time if there is a travel industry, an airline, a food supply, a form of shelter available then there will be so many like me who will want to go out and celebrate the fact that we have come through C19 and are ready willing and able to explore the beauty of this world and its diverse and extraordinary peoples. Bounce back big time. Keep it simple, keep it safe, keep it coming.

I have only ever had the most amazing holidays with Intrepid, with amazing tour leaders.

Glad to hear some leaders being so kind. Our experience was very different. We were in Cuba when our tour was cancelled. our leader wouldn’t initially let us use an Intrepid phone to make an international call to our travel agent as it wasn’t to intrepid (after 3 or 4 hours of asking he relented but it ran out of credit after 8mins. Had to give him 40 cuc to top phone up. After reading statement to us, wanted us to sign a waiver stating intrepid would essentially have no responsibility for us. No duty of care. Shown more care and kindness from strawberry free tour guides (gave email and phone nos if they could help) and casa owner.

Our trip was cancelled before we flew out .
This would have been the first time we have travelled with Intrepid & although we were unsure of your sincerity at first , we have realised that you are a good company who cares about their customers & we have faith to use you in the future , when the world is safe to travel .

Thank you for the update. I had booked a trip to Indonesia for 24/04/2020 which I had to cancel due to the Corona Virus. I booked the trip through Travel Club. I’m still waiting on the 50% refund. My name is Michelle Tayler.
Bali and Lombok Adventure was the trip I had booked.This would have been my 6th trip with Intrepid, I would prefer a full refund.

Unfortunately we feel we had no support from intrepid … ! We had to organise our own flights home …and then pay for 2 nights accomodation until we left India .
We were on day 3 ( which was really day 2 as the first day was only a meeting ! ) of a 23 day tour ! India Experience . We think Intrepid should give us a full credit for the whole trip again … as a good will gesture for no help at all in India …

My wife an I have four Intrepud trips commencing from June 18 through August. We have until April 23rd to confirm but honestly at that point in time we won’t even know if we can get to our starting points with airlines shut down. Can this be extended for another month? What should we do?

Your letter is most uplifting. We completed our Trek Patagonia tour 1-11 Feb with Augustin as our guide. We have not stopped thinking how he is faring along with all the other national park guides, hotelliers etc who looked after us on that wonderful tour who are now probably gravely affected financially by this current situation. Our wish to you is that you are able to provide some kind of assistance to tie over these wonderful people at least in the short term. We look forward to travelling with Intrepid again in the future.

Thanks for keeping me updated. I still haven’t had confirmation that my booking 6106894 has been rolled over to next year. Nor have I heard if my associated flights will be honoured next year or if I am eligible for a refund.

And yes we were looking at a few trips earlier this year however, I am sorry for you, that we decided to postpone our travel.

As repeat travellers with Intrepid, I admire your caring attitude to your fellowman. This virus situation will all pass within months or a year and the world will move on. At least we are not going through what families had to cope with, during the first & second World Wars. We al least have plenty of food, a first class social security system and technology today, which our forebears did not have.

I have by appreciated the professional and generous way that intrepid has kept in contact regularly and offered support. You cancelled my trip a couple of days before I left for Japan but I went there anyway as I had other trips booked. What you offered when you cancelled my trip was generous and fair and I look forward to using my balance sometime.
