Everyone has the right to experience the joy of travel. Here’s what you need to know as an LGBTQIA+ traveller in Greece.
Greece is one of Europe’s most popular destinations, welcoming millions of travellers from all over the world every year. While it’s largely accepting of LGBTQIA+ visitors – especially in big cities and on popular islands – smaller towns and rural areas may be more conservative. Being aware of local attitudes can help you avoid unwanted attention and have a smoother trip.
Is Greece safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?
Greece is generally safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers, particularly in hotspots like Athens, Thessaloniki, Mykonos, Santorini and Corfu. Violent crime is rare, but public displays of affection may be frowned upon in places where traditional values prevail.
Visibility for trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming folks is increasing, though social acceptance can vary and it’s not unusual to get curious looks or questions outside big cities. Gender-neutral toilets are also uncommon, so choose the restroom where you feel most comfortable.

LGBTQIA+ rights in Greece
Greece has a long history of same-sex relationships that date back to the sixth-century Greek poet Sappho, whose lyrical poems explored love between women. It was also among the first European countries to decriminalise same sex relationships, though broader rights didn’t happen until much later. Laws protecting against gender identity- and sexual orientation-based discrimination were passed in 2005, while same-sex civil unions were legalised in 2015, followed by same-sex marriage in 2024.
LGBTQIA+ culture in Greece
Athens, Greece’s capital, has a vibrant LGBTQIA+ scene, especially in the inner-west neighbourhoods of Gazi and Metaxourgeio. These former industrial areas have a similar vibe to Berlin with plenty of clubs, tavernas, galleries and bars. Avdi Square and Agrias Irinis are popular spots to grab a drink before hitting the clubs.
The Greek Islands have long been popular with LGBTQIA+ travellers, particularly Mykonos – a world-renowned party island. Lesbos, Greece’s third-largest island – and the birthplace of the poet Sappho – has become a popular destination for lesbian women (the word ‘lesbian’ derives from the island’s name). It also hosts the International Eressos Women’s Festival every September in the village of Skala Eresou where Sappho was born.
Travelling with us

Intrepid travellers span all ages and backgrounds, and regardless of local laws or attitudes, our leaders are committed to ensuring everyone feels safe and comfortable. We don’t tolerate any form of discrimination, violence or harassment – either between travellers, with our partners or with local people.
Even in countries with limited LGBTQIA+ rights, you'll always be welcomed and supported by us.
Twin-share is the standard arrangement on our trips. We pair solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender listed on your passport. If you identify differently from the gender on your passport, please get in touch to discuss rooming options. If you’d like your own space, individual rooms are available on most trips for an additional cost.
Double beds are available in some destinations. If you’re travelling with a partner and would prefer a double, let us know and we'll do our best to arrange it for you.
