ten girls, ten stories, ten voices for change

gimse from i am a girlThere is a group of people in the world today who are more persecuted than anyone else, but they are not political or religious activists…They are girls.

Gimse is 14 and a mother of a 3 month old baby girl. She makes her living as a sex worker by the river in Phnom Penh. Gimse lives with her mother who is sick with diabetes and needs daily medication. Gimse is a tough young woman who knows that her mother and daughter depend on her. The work that she does puts her in constant danger and she often faces dangerous situations. But as she says in her own words “screaming out will make the abuse worse.”

Did you know that in the world today 62 million girls of primary school age are out of school? Every minute a young woman dies from maternal mortality and three quarters of the world’s HIV sufferers under 25 are women?

When Rebecca Barry was made aware of these horrifying statistics, she decided to make a film to help bring these issues to a wider audience and facilitate change. I AM A GIRL tells the stories of ten different girls in ten different countries. Through ten personal stories, I AM A GIRL paints a picture of what it means to be a girl in the 21st century.

The Intrepid Foundation helped financially support the production of a website and trailer for I AM A GIRL, but now AU$20,000 is needed by the end of May to complete the second phase of the project. Please visit the I AM A GIRL website to find out how you can be an important part of this unique documentary that will inform and start a much-needed conversation with a wider audience.
