saturday night strut in new york
Ever been star-struck by a city? When Sarah Plaskitt touched down in one of the USA’s most famous megacities all those memorable movie moments came flooding back and this was her chance to strut in the shoes of her on-screen idols…
“I have never been more thrilled than the second I stepped out of the airport and hopped into a yellow cab headed for the bright lights of New York City. As I spoke the words “corner of 38th and Park please” I felt like I was in a scene from one of thousands of movies shot in the most effervescent and exciting city in the world. Just spotting the familiar street signs and sites seen hundreds of times before, I couldn’t believe I was truly there; 42nd Street, Grand Central Station, Rockerfeller Centre and Central Park. Ā
New York is overwhelming with so much to do and so much to see, you can walk the entire length of the island from the South Street Sea Port up to Harlem and beyond; and the food is almost as overwhelming as the city itself. I had an encounter of my own with a Bacon Whooppee (triple decker chicken salad with crispy bacon) at Carnegie Deli, after which I swore I’d never eat again, but that did not stop me grabbing a Pretzel and Hot Dog from a street vendor an hour later (an absolute must in this city!).
Besides taking in the regular sites of New York City, a trip to Brooklyn cannot be beaten. I put myself in Tony Manero’s shoes and strutted as he did in Saturday Night Fever, taking in the diverse cultures, all the while keeping an ear out for that distinctive Brooklyn accent – forgeddaboudit!”
