Northern Thailand in bloom
Nested near the Burmese border in northern Thailand, Chiang Rai City boasts an extraordinary display of flowers around the end of December and early January.
From north to south Thailand is famous for its orchids and Chiang Rai makes a beautiful backdrop for a flower festival. On display are exotic and ornate butterfly orchids, insectivorous pitcher plants and bizarre examples of the flowering ginger family.
The provence of Chiang Rai is often chosen as a destination for it’s contrast to Thailand’s south. It’s easy to leave the bustle of Bangkok behind as you travel north and embrace the tranquility of the region. Culture and craft poke out of the green countryside at every turn in the form of markets, wats and the fascinating people of the hill tribes.
Chiang Mai’s ‘little sister’, Chiang Rai boasts a great night market and a variety of good restaurants. This charming city has a small-town feel and is a fantastic place to explore on foot. Or you may wish to explore the town from the Mekong River on a boat trip.
Restaurants and establishments take great pride in their displays of native flowers. You can see magnificent orchids throughout the provence at any time of year of course, no need to wait for the flower festival!
