Impressions of Iguazu
Mother Nature puts on one of her most impressive performances at Iguazu and Paul McMahon recalls the special day when he got to experience the might of the falls for himself…
“My most memorable national park experience was at Iguazu Falls, Argentina. What made this so remarkable was the pleasure in being so close to one of the most spectacular waterfalls on this planet.
When I first arrived at the park all the tourists jumped on a massive tank-like machine, as if we were about to go to war with the jungle before us. Through the jungle we traversed, with various animals and plants being spotted from our vehicle, almost what I would assume an African safari would feel like, without the savannah.
Finally we reached our destination at a small wharf, where we got on a boat bound for the falls themselves. We sped along the river with the type of crazy force I would have expected from whitewater rafting in Queenstown, New Zealand. The adventure had hit a climax. And then we saw it.
The falls themselves in all their splendour. As the boat picked up speed we moved closer to the rushing water, getting drenched by nature’s ultimate shower. Everyone was screaming with the thrill, laughing, and the oldies were holding on for dear life.
Then excitement turned to a peaceful calm. I was in awe. It was amazing and an experience to remember. I now dream of all the other falls left to discover, along with their national parks.”
