Finding Aqaba’s best feast
Some might accuse the Intrepid team of being obsessed with food, and it’s true that there are few things we love better than tracking down a great local eatery. When Rami Hazou, from Intrepid My Adventure Store and former Intrepid Group Leader, spent time in Jordan, it didn’t take him long to find a special place to feast…
“The only port city of Jordan is called Aqaba. It lies at the northern most tip of the Gulf of Aqaba in the Red Sea. Known mainly for its warm waters and exquisite coral and marine life, Aqaba has much more to offer. With its modern city, great restaurants and night life, on top of being a free trade zone, it has become a traveller’s paradise. It’s also the gateway for famous Wadi Rum, where Lawrence of Arabia was filmed and you can explore amazing rock and sand landscapes that are unique to the area.
In the heart of Aqaba is the Captain’s Restaurant, that over 14 years ago started out as a small local eatery with 5 tables and set menus. It has now become one of the best restaurants in Aqaba, while still maintaining a value-for-money menu. For approximately US$6-9 you can get a baked fish with chips or vegetables, or the famous fisherman’s basket that can be shared between two people. If you’re not into seafood, then you can enjoy a mixed grill of lamb, chicken and vegetable shish kebabs with chips. The food is to die for and there is always a chef’s special, which I have tried on numerous occasions and have yet to be disappointed.
The restaurant is well-known so getting there is easy. Booking in advance is not essential, unless you have a big group. It’s an easy 10-15 minute walk from most hotels or a quick and cheap cab ride of your not feeling energetic. I strongly suggest heading to Captain’s for a great dining experience, fantastic friendly service and a memorable meal!”
