a top trip: timor-leste

timor festivalMore than 100 Intrepid travellers have been quick to join the special club of early visitors to the young nation of Timor-Leste. Act fast and you too could enjoy the unique experience on our trip departing 15 July, 2012, when we have a handful of discounted places available. This is a wonderful time of year to go – the rains have mostly cleared but the hills are still green and spectacular, making every bend in the road open out to a magnificent vista.

Jane Crouch was Intrepid’s first group leader in Timor-Leste and she now has a longstanding and close association with this remarkable country. Jane recently caught up with our latest group and discovered that this new nation continues to captivate and charm its visitors…

“Our May travellers were privileged to witness some of Timor-Leste’s 10th birthday celebrations. There was the huge midnight ceremony at Tasi Tolu (3 lakes), where crowds of locals, international visitors and dignitaries celebrated 10 years of independence and gathered for the swearing in of the new President, Tuar Matan Ruak. And then the Intrepid group got to witness some of the districts’ celebratory activities including a sports festival en route to the hilltop town of Maubisse.

We must issue a warning about Timor and its people – they’re addictive! We know many Intrepid travellers to Timor have subsequently returned for another ‘fix’ of Timor’s hospitality, or have become involved in their own community’s Timor-Leste Friendship group. Some feedback from our last travellers suggests why:

From Gary: “Please visit this wonderful young country. The UN period is almost over and the great people are waiting for tourists to arrive. The trip is so varied that even veteran travellers like myself could not get bored. In two weeks you can experience cold mountains, very wet rainforests and challenging roads, great plains, oh and two tropical islands. The people were all so genuinely pleased to interact with us and having such a great group leader I felt honoured to stay at the places we did and meet so many fascinating people. One surprise highlight was meeting Dr Jose Ramos-Horta twice along the way!”

From Linda: “On our trip to Timor-Leste we meet some wonderful people, a great guide (Arnaldo) who also was one of our drivers, saw an awesome country with spectacular scenery from beaches to mountains. It is such a young country with a dark past which we need to remember.”

Need we say more?”
