a top trip: everest base camp
This week’s top trip doesn’t make light of how tough it can be hiking in the Himalayas, but getting the light just right is another challenge that Intrepid traveller Marianne Lim was determined to rise to in Nepal…
“When I booked an Intrepid Active trip to Everest Base Camp I made a silent resolution to get up early each morning to try and catch the dawn light on the enormous awe-inspiring mountain ranges I was bound to see.
The first time I was put to the test was in Pothana, after a sleepless night as the rain teemed down. As my alarm went off at 5.30am and I struggled out of my sleeping bag, I was horrified to note that I could see my room surroundings, meaning that dawn was already happening!
I grabbed my tripod and camera, ran outside in my pyjamas and sure enough, there to greet me after the night’s downpour was a pristine clear sky and the Annapurna Ranges in silhouette, while the sun rose to my right. I stayed out for almost one hour watching the sun make its way up above the peaks – it was simply magic.
This experience was repeated many times over as I tried to make my way to Everest Base Camp. It never failed to take my breath away as the dawning sun’s rays illuminated the beautiful landscape surrounding me, whether it was at Namche Bazaar or Dingboche. Now as I sit at home reminiscing, those emotions I felt in the rugged wilderness of the Himalayas will always be part of the surreal dreamscape I associate with Nepal, a place that I will, without a doubt, visit once more.”
