If you’re planning a trip to Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park, you’re probably wondering what to pack. We’ve put together this guide so you can spend less time worrying about what to pack, and more time getting exciting for your trip. And just remember, once you’re in the outback there’s much less around in terms of shops and amenities than in a city! So it’s best to make sure you’ve packed all of the essentials.
1. Walking boots
First up, we have walking boots. Our Uluru tours involve a fair bit of walking as there’s so much to see on the trails around Uluru and Kata Tjuta. You’ll need a comfy pair of walking boots to see you through long days exploring the great outdoors. And please, for blisters sake, remember to break them in before your trip if you buy a new pair. If you don’t have boots, a trusted pair of sneakers with decent sole grip should do the job.
2. Socks
You’ll also need a pair of quality, breathable socks to keep your tootsies comfortable underneath your boots. We’re not talking about the cotton socks that you wear on the daily, we’re talking proper hiking socks that are designed to keep your feet dry and prevent pesky blisters from forming on your ankles. Trust us, your feet will thank you for it at the end of the day.
3. Long, lightweight layers
Make sure you bring enough long, lightweight clothing to see you through your trip. Long pants and sleeves help prevent pesky insect bites and also double up as sun protection.
4. Sun hat
A sun hat is crucial no matter what time of year you visit. Ideally, you should bring a wide-brimmed hat that covers your head and neck to protect your skin from the sun.
5. Sunglasses
Sunnies are another item that might seem like a no brainer, but it’s really important not to forget them. You don’t want to be squinting all day and not be able to enjoy the views properly!
6. Sunscreen
Sunscreen in the outback? Okay, we know it’s a no brainer. But it’s super important. The Australian sun is strong, but we’re just reminding you as we really wouldn’t want you to burn.
7. Camera
We’d put a camera in the same category as walking boots or sunscreen… well, almost. What we’re saying is, a camera is really important. You’ll see so many awe-inspiring sights and views on your Uluru tour that you’ll want your camera handy to snap away take awesome photos to look back on.
8. Head net
Depending on the season, you might need a head net to protect you from flies and insects. Summer is usually the worst time for flies when the weather is hot and muggy. There are still flies in spring and autumn, so you might still need a hat, but they’re less annoying. Come winter, most of the flies have been and gone.
9. Insect repellent
Even with long layers and a head net, you’ll still want some type of insect repellent - especially if you plan on spending time by natural waterholes like Ellery Creek on your Red Centre adventure. Spritz the spray over your clothes to deter any human skin-loving insects.
10. Warm layers
Being in the Aussie outback you might assume it doesn't get cold at Uluru, but it can get very chilly indeed, especially in the winter months when temperatures often fall below 0°C at night. Pack base layers, warm layers like a jumper or fleece and a warm coat for the cold nights and early morning sunrise walks. You might also need a woolly hat and gloves for winter trips. It’s generally warm or hot during the day, but you’ll definitely want to rug up in the evening.
11. Daypack
You'll definitely need a small daypack to carry essential items like your water bottle, camera, insect repellent and sunscreen with you on walks and hikes. A small, lightweight bag should do the job, as you don't want anything too big or heavy to weigh you down on the trails.
12. Reusable water bottle
A large reusable water bottle will be your best friend. It’s super important to stay hydrated, so bring a one-litre bottle that you can refill throughout the day. We recommend drinking one litre of water for every hour you spend walking in the park.
13. Extra bag
After hours of walking around the park, expect to get a little sweaty and dusty! An extra bag comes in super handy to separate your dirty clothes from your fresh ones. A small fabric bag will do just fine.
