What to wear in Jordan

If you're planning a trip to Jordan, you're probably wondering what to pack. With a predominantly desert climate, sun-protective items including a wide-brimmed sun hat and sunglasses are a must, but there are some cultural considerations you may want to factor into your packing list, too.

What should I wear in Jordan?

Jordan is a predominantly Muslim country and conservative clothing is the norm for all genders. You don't need to cover yourself from head to toe, but honouring the modest dress code shows respect for the local culture and customs.

Aim to cover your shoulders and knees at the very least, and avoid showing midriff or cleavage. Wearing shorts can also be seen as disrespectful, so opt for long pants instead. Outside of the capital city of Amman and other tourist hubs, tops that don't cover the shoulders may be classed as underwear, so err on the side of caution if it doubt.

Remember to dress modestly when visiting sites of religious significance or else you may be denied entry.

As well as being culturally appropriate, you'll find that covering up with long, loose-fitting layers is also a great way to keep cool and protect your skin from the sun and insect bites – the heat and sun in Jordan can be intense.

Dress codes are generally stricter for women than men, and many female travellers choose to wear a headscarf like the local women. Jordanian women who don't wear a headscarf usually tie their hair up instead, so you may wish to do this as well, particularly when visiting religious sites.

Overall, Jordanian people are extremely friendly and hospitable and will welcome you with open arms (and plenty of Bedouin tea!).

Packing list for Jordan

As a mostly desert country, the weather in Jordan can be extreme. Desert regions are dry all year with swelteringly hot summers and cold winter nights that can see sub-zero temperatures. If you're visiting in winter, don't forget thermal layers, a scarf, a woolly hat, gloves and a warm jacket – especially on itineraries that include camping in Wadi Rum.
