Delve into the sights, sounds and tastes of traditional Spanish culture in the sizzling south.
Some of Spain’s most famous traditions, such as tapas and flamenco, originated from its southern reaches. The former battleground of Muslim and Christian rulers, the Andalusia region, owes much of its charm to a colourful past. You could spend days marvelling at the ornate churches that used to be mosques, and sprawling Moorish palaces like the Alcazar in Seville and Alhambra in Granada. And then there’s the food – Andalusian staples like fried fish and spinach with chickpeas are simple yet bursting with flavour. Cruising the warm Mediterranean waters that surround the south lets you delve into this glorious culture while taking advantage of sunny beach towns and lesser-known gems that line the coast – all with a glass of local sherry in hand, naturally.

Highlights of Spain

Soak up sun and history in Seville
The capital of Spain’s Andalusia region has a quiet, old-world charm to it. Famous for its impossibly beautiful architecture, tapas and flamenco, Seville is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Take your time strolling historic streets, sampling local specialties in the city’s many tapas bars and exploring architectural treasures such as the Alcazar or Plaza de Espana.

Uncover Granada’s Moorish roots
Granada’s Moorish heritage in ingrained in the fabric of the city, from atmospheric teterias (teahouses) serving Moorish pastries to the labyrinth of tiny alleys, whitewashed houses, cafes and flamenco bars in the historic Arab quarter. But the jewel of the Moorish legacy is without a doubt Alhambra, the stunning UNESCO-listed palace complex.

Musuem-hop in Malaga
This vibrant port town is an emerging cultural hub with museums and art galleries seemingly at every corner. Its ‘Mile of Art’ features a well-regarded contemporary art centre as well as museums dedicated to Picasso and Carmen Thyssen among others. Malaga also boasts chic boutiques, a stellar food scene and proximity to some pretty fantastic beaches.
