no price tag on italy

ponte vecchioIs there somewhere you’ve travelled that, given the chance, you would go back to again and again? Intrepid’s Rachel Wasser can normally be found leading Intrepid travellers through China and Russia and loving every minute of her Trans-Siberian adventures, but she admits to having a weakness when it comes to La Dolce Vita, splurging on the good life in Italy

“For me, Italy will always be my guilty pleasure destination. Roundtrip airfare from the US in high season is almost enough to put me off my visit but, in the end, it is totally worth the splurge!

There are countless ways to spend your time (and money!) wandering the cobblestoned streets of this enchanting country. If shopping is your travel treat then you can’t go past the gold stores on the Ponte Vecchio or the leather markets of Florence, in Venice the allure is unique blown Murano glass and in Rome street after street is lined with boutiques of big name designers.

Here I have enjoyed some of my most memorable sightseeing experiences – a gondola ride on the Grand Canal, La Scala in Milan, the statue of David in Florence, The Colosseum and Forum in Rome, Pompeii near Naples, visiting lemon-scented towns along the Amalfi Coast or the Greek ruins of Syracuse in Sicily.

I could add so many more wonderful things to my must-see and must-do lists in Italy, but before you do anything you have to try the FOOD – the cheese in Parma, the pesto in Cinque Terre, the wine in Tuscany, the pizza in Naples – it’s impossible not to indulge in every way possible! I could spend my life savings and gain 20 pounds and still leave Italy happier than when I arrived. Italy is a country that stole my heart 13 years ago and every time I go back I fall a little more in love. For that kind of experience, there just can be no price tag!”
