Why you'll love this trip
  • The stars of this trip are the dramatic and varied landscapes of lush Central America. If you’re thinking active volcanoes, idyllic beaches and emerald jungles – this trip has got you covered.
  • Wind your way through the otherworldly ruins of Copan in Honduras, famous for it numerous elaborate stelae.
  • Nicaragua is often neglected by travellers in favour of its neighbours but their loss is your gain as you’ll have incredible Ometepe Island, which was formed by massive volcanoes, pretty much all to yourself.
  • Hike, cycle or zip-line through the steamy cloud forests of Monteverde – there’s so many ways to experience the lush canopies and see unique Central American wildlife.
  • Try out your Nicaragua sign language skills when you order breakfast at an atmospheric cafe housed in a historic building that is managed and staffed by members of the local deaf community.

Is this trip right for you?
  • This trip is made for travellers who value their independence but also want the benefit of a local leader and a group of like-minded travellers. The itinerary includes basic accommodation and has free time for activities when your leader will offer suggestions. Please budget spending money for optional activities you want to partake in.
  • You cover heaps of ground on this trip, and so there are some long travel days (especially Day 8). This trip includes time spent travelling in a private vehicle with your group. Extra space can be tight, and conditions may feel a little cramped. Although this can be tiresome, it’s all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers and take in the picturesque scenery. This is a real Central American adventure, after all!
  • As this trip covers destinations across five countries, you'll need to make several border crossings. While these are usually straightforward, please prepare to be patient.
  • Central America is tropical, so expect a hot and humid climate. Make sure you protect yourself from the sun, wear comfortable, light clothing and stay hydrated – especially when out on walking tours. Air conditioning may not always be available in your rooms. Occasionally, properties may require an additional charge for the use of air conditioning.
  • From walking the Costa Rican border crossing to optional full-day volcano hikes, this trip can involve a lot of walking. Please ensure you bring sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothes. To make the most of the trip, it's best if you have at least a moderate level of fitness.
  • There will be times when you have to walk with your luggage, and for this reason, we recommend packing light and using a backpack or something easy to carry.

Amazing trip though a bit fast paced at times and still a basic level. Nevertheless, what made it great was having Ben as a tour leader. I truly don’t have enough words to express my appreciation for having Ben on this tour! Ben was definitely …the cherry on top for this trip and I’ll be forever grateful for everything he has done for my Central America experience. From helping out with border crossing or even personal requests to always being approachable and share knowledge and a smile, nothing was too much for him. He has definitely set the bar really high for Intrepid’s tour leaders. I appreciate this should be more about the trip than Ben but honestly, my amazing Central America experience would not be the same without him!

I arrived on this trip with very little knowledge of Central America, only intrigue. Now I feel entirely different. The combination of destinations, activities and tours available, paired with Emilson's vast knowledge of the area made me to want to learn as much as possible about the area. Not only do I know a lot about the history of the countries I visited, I'm also now knowledgeable about current affairs. I was blown away by how safe I felt, how beautiful it is and how interesting each place was.

Fantastic trip, highly recommend it! 5 fascinating countries, lots to learn about the history and culture. Our tour leader Choko and the local guides were full of knowledge. Beautiful nature in the countryside, loads of great optional activities to choose from (do them all!!!) Delicious food (especially street stalls). Be prepared for long travel days and early starts, but the views from the bus are great. Wish we could have had more time in Guatemala and Honduras - I’ll just have to come back again!

I had a blast on this trip! Met some awesome people, a few that I'll be in touch with for a long time. I ended up leaving with a good idea of what Central America culture and soul is like. Definitely recommend spending a few days in Antigua before the trip starts.
