Nevada is a fantastic place to embark on a two-wheeled journey. Like many other states in the United States, bicycles are classified as vehicles in Nevada which gives cyclists similar rights and obligations as drivers. For example, in Las Vegas it's against the law to ride on the footpath so you will need to cycle on the road with other vehicles unless there's a designated bike lane.

Do you legally have to wear a helmet when cycling in Nevada?

If you're wondering if you can ride a bicycle without a helmet in Nevada, the short answer is yes. Nevada does not currently have any state laws requiring cyclists (of all ages) to wear a helmet. That said, not wearing one poses a significant risk and you'll be much better off wearing one. The Nevada Department of Transportation recommends all cyclists wear a helmet as they can make a massive difference in the unfortunate event of an accident. Helmets help prevent fatalities and protect your head from brain injuries if you fall or get knocked off your bike. When it comes to cycling safety, it's always better to play it safe.

Wearing a helmet is mandatory on all Intrepid cycling tours. If you need to buy one before your trip, it's best to go to a bicycle shop where the shop assistants can help you find a well-fitted helmet for your head as they're most effective when they fit correctly. As a general rule, a helmet should feel snug but not tight, and cover your forehead.
