Highlights of our trips from Lima

Treat your tastebuds in Lima
Welcome to the (foodie) capital of Peru! Lima is one of the hottest food destinations in the world with an abundance of fresh, native produce and talented chefs cooking up a storm of traditional and creative Peruvian dishes. Be sure to try ceviche (cured raw fish), lomo saltado (beef stir fry), anticuchos de corazó (grilled beef heart skewers) and butifarra (pork sandwich) – all washed down with a pisco sour (or two).

Discover ancient culture in Sacred Valley
Sacred Valley has been a vital source of food for locals in the high Andes for centuries. It's also home to the spectacular ruins of Sacsayhuamán – another site that will show you how epic the Inca civilisation was. Take part in an ancient cooking ritual with the Chichubamba people, hike to the top of the terraces for soul-stirring views of the valley or learn how to make traditional chocolate or corn-beer.

Hike the iconic Inca Trail
Follow in the footsteps of a great lost civilisation on the iconic Inca Trail. After tackling challenging mountain passes, walking through mist-shrouded forests and waking up to snow-capped views of the Andes, the feeling of reaching the Sun Gate which overlooks the ancient 15th-century citadel of Machu Picchu will stay with you forever. This bucket-list hike is definitely one for the highlight reel.

Hang out in the Amazon
Journey into the untouched world of the Amazon on an immersive jungle adventure. Stay in a nature lodge and wake up to the ambient chirps, trills and croaks of exotic birds, cruise down the Amazon River on a canoe in search of rare giant river otters and discover the healing properties of native plants as you hike beneath leafy canopies with a local guide.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Your destination or airline may still require specific proof of testing or vaccination. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Peru has visa-free travel agreements with most countries, and foreign nationals including those from the United Kingdom, United States, New Zealand and Canada do not require a visa for tourism purposes.
Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. You can also check the Essential Trip Information section of your itinerary for more information.
Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts in one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours from Lima operate all year round.
June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather. The advantage to travelling in these areas at this time is that many other travellers make the mistake of postponing their plans until the dry season, leaving you with more of Peru to yourself.
The best time to visit the infamous Nazca Lines or the coastal areas is from December to April, although the other months of the year are perfectly good times to visit as well. Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for cleaning during February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.
Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Peru. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water and refill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead. Ask your leader or the hotel where you’re staying where filtered water can be found. It's advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.
Many travellers fly into the capital of Cusco, before taking the train or choosing a hiking tour. The stepping stone to Machu Picchu is Ollantaytambo, which is about 1.5 hours away from Cusco by bus.
From Ollantaytambo the most common ways to get to Machu Picchu are:
- By train
- Hiking the Inca Trail (one way to Machu Picchu)
- Taking the equally scenic and rewarding Quarry Trail
- Trekking the challenging 8-day Choquequirao Trail
Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of your trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.
For more information on insurance, please go to our Travel Insurance hub.
