What to pack for Yosemite by season
Spring and autumn in Yosemite are mild with chilly mornings and evenings. Summer brings hot, sunny and dry days with brief afternoon thunderstorms, and winter is cold and wet (but still fun!). With that in mind, what to pack for each season varies slightly.
Spring and autumn
While days are comfortable, the mornings and evenings are still on the cooler side during these seasons. Rain is common in spring, and the snowmelt makes the waterfalls roar in overdrive, so hikes like the Mist Trail are extra wet and it’s important to have waterproof gear handy.
- A sun hat and warm beanie
- Base layers: moisture-wicking shirts and leggings
- Fleece jacket
- Rain jacket
- Lightweight packable down jacket
- Water resistant shoes
Summer
The most important packing essential for summer is water storage so you can stay hydrated in the heat! A reusable water bottle and sun protection are a must.

- Hiking shorts
- T-shirts and tank tops
- Rain jacket
- A light sweater or packable layer
- Bathing suit

Winter
Cold temperatures and snowy conditions hit the park in winter. While snow doesn’t stick along for long, a light dusting in the valley isn’t uncommon. When packing, keep in mind it’s better to be too warm than not warm enough.

- Long-sleeved shirts
- A thick sweater or fleece
- Long, warm pants
- Thermal underwear
- Warm socks
- Beanie
- A pair of gloves and a scarf
- Sturdy, waterproof boots with a good grip
