Take your extraordinary Australian adventure off four wheels and onto two feet.Â
Walking tours are full of highs and lows from that ‘on-top-of-the-world’ feeling you get when you’ve finished trekking your way through challenging terrain to the weariness that comes with being on your feet for hours at a time. But with every uneven path comes unforgettable landscapes and our Australia walking tours and holidays boast views that’ll have you catching your breath time and time again. Whether you want to walk across Tasmania’s rugged scenery, hike through the Northern Territory’s desert wilderness, or trek along the cliffs in Western Australia, the magic of Australia’s natural beauty is waiting – all you have to do is put one foot in front of the other.

Highlights of our Australia walking toursÂ

Marvel at the beauty of the Flinders Ranges
Get off the perfectly paved asphalt and onto the tourist road less travelled by exploring the culturally rich and breathtakingly beautiful Flinders Ranges. Home to the Adnyamathanha people and nestled in the South Australian wilderness, this mountain range will have you drowning in spectacular views from the outback landscape littered with kangaroos to the sensational scenery awaiting your arrival at the top of Mt. Ohlssen Bagge.Â

Walk the stunning Scenic Rim in Queensland
This astounding destination isn’t only scenic by name but scenic by nature with its varied landscapes and world-class wine regions just waiting to be explored. Soothe your soul under the dense canopies of Lamington National Park, weave your way up the impressive Mt Cordeaux, and dip your fingers into the cool waters of tranquil rock pools as the landscape comes to life with the sounds of native wildlife and wind that whispers. Â

Tackle the Cape-to-Cape Track in Western Australia
Replace the city lights and traffic sounds for clifftop views and crashing waves on our guided walking tour of Western Australia’s remarkable Cape-to-Cape Track. Recognised as one of Australia’s great walks, this track will lead you on an epic journey past red granite boulders, along golden sandy beaches, and under forest canopies until you reach the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse – a peaceful spot that’s perfect for reflecting on your incredible adventure.Â

Trek the Larapinta Trail in the Northern Territory
Some landscapes take your breath away and then there’s the West MacDonnell National Park – an otherworldly expanse of shadowed gorges, twisting riverbanks, imposing mountains, and wide-open plains that are in a league of their own. Trek over sunburnt desert scenes under cloudless, baby blue skies and stumble upon sacred Aboriginal sites that have remained undisturbed for centuries on what is, quite simply, the hiking tour of a lifetime.Â

Make your way across the Cradle Mountain Overland Track
No Australian bucket list is complete with exploring the wilderness of Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain and once you catch sight of its natural beauty you’ll know why. Lace up your hiking shoes and grab your sense of adventure to set out on a myriad of walking trails from the ‘I-could-do-this-in-my-sleep’ to the ‘how-much-further?’ Trek past jagged peaks and through thick forests – spotting wallabies and wombats as you go – for a holiday you won’t forget in a hurry.Â

Take in the scenery at NSW’s Blue Mountains
Keep your head above the clouds but your feet on solid ground in the beautiful Blue Mountains, New South Wales’ natural playground. Delicately entwined in Eucalyptus haze and covered in ancient rock formations, this World Heritage listed mountain range promises misty forests straight out of storybook pages and untamed valleys full of waterfalls you won’t be able to stop looking at. All the best adventures start with a single step – take yours in this magical setting.Â

Australia walking FAQs
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
Determining what time of year is the best time to embark on a walking trip in Australia largely depends on which state you're in and where you're planning to walk. If you're planning a trip to the Northern Territory it's advised that you don't travel during the summer season (December, January, and February) as it's cyclone season and this can lead to unpredictable weather patterns and unsafe walking conditions. This is the same for Queensland, especially in the far north. Any other state is suitable to visit all year round.Â

What to pack for a walking trip can depend on how difficult the walk that you plan to do is but generally it's a good idea to make sure you have the below items:
- Backpack/day bagÂ
- Comfortable walking shoesÂ
- SunhatÂ
- SunscreenÂ
- Retractable walking poles
- Reusable drink bottleÂ
There are many outstanding walks throughout the entirety of Australia so regardless of which state you visit, you're sure to find a walk that suits your fitness level and appetite for breathtaking views. Here are some of our favourites:
- Larapinta Trail, Northern TerritoryÂ
- Cradle Mountain Overland Track, Tasmania
- The Great Ocean Road, VictoriaÂ
- Kakadu National Park, Northern TerritoryÂ
- Blue Mountains, New South WalesÂ
- Cape to Cape Track, Western Australia
- Flinders Ranges, South Australia
- Scenic Rim, Queensland
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
