There’s something wholesome about drinking a glass of Shiraz in the same vineyard it came from, or knowing the food on your plate grew in the paddock over the road. Barossa Valley is arguably Australia’s best-known red wine region, with over 150 wineries dotted throughout its sun-soaked vineyards. Combine two of life’s best things — nature and wine — on a cycling adventure through three distinct regions, or experience a little bit of everything on our Best of South Australia trip.

Cycle the Barossa Trail

Surely there’s no better way to experience wine country than on a bicycle? Peddle down the quiet pathways of the Barossa Trail, a sealed and car-free route that cuts through the heart of the region. There’ll be plenty of opportunities to hop off your bicycle and refuel and hydrate with German breads, pastries, and, of course, wine.

Maggie is one of Australia’s most beloved chefs; she fully embraces the paddock-to-plate ethos, and you can taste the fruits of her labour in everything she cooks and sells. Watch a live cooking demonstration, walk around the dam beneath olive and lemon trees, or sit out on the deck with a platter of cheese.

Barossa Valley is most famous for its deep, bold red wine varieties including Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. Other popular varieties include Riesling, Semillon and Chardonnay.

Barossa Valley experiences a mild climate similar to the Mediterranean, which is what makes it such an amazing place to grow grapes. It typically has cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers with plenty of sunshine. Autumn days are balmy and dry with cool nights, while spring is mild and sunny.

You can have an amazing time all year round in Barossa, but summer and autumn are generally considered to be the best times to visit. Autumn is also when the much anticipated Barossa Vintage Festival is on.
