This traveller got the coolest Antarctic experience we’ve ever seen

written by Intrepid Travel February 24, 2016

We’re all for getting close to nature, but this is just ridiculous. Antarctic traveller Emma Gilchrist (hereby referred to as the luckiest girl in the world) got the surprise of her life when a posse of humpback whales surfaced right next to her kayak. It’s fair to say there’s no guarantee this will happen to you on your Antarctic expedition, but do you know where it’s even less likely to happen? NOT IN ANTARCTICA. Think about it.

Thanks to Emma for the video. You can check out more of Emma’s adventures on Twitter. Feature image c/o Yellow Magpie, Flickr

My friend Marguerite and I just returned from Magdalena Bay at Puerto San Carlos on the west coast of Baja, California. We saw two mother whales and two babies while on a trip into the bay on one of the boats of Capt. Marco Antonio. Between the middle of January to the middle of March, his company has an over 90% rate of seeing whales on their trips into the bay. One mother and one baby came within a few feet of our 20 foot long boat. One swam just a few feet under our boat. There were 11 such boats around them and they seemed totally comfortable with us being there. A few of the boat passengers were able to touch them when they came near the boats. Contact Marco at Magdalenabaywhales.com for information about seeing whales if you are interested in seeing whales up close. He is also associated with a small hotel in San Marco which is simple but adequate. The rooms each have a bath and are clean. I would recommend contacting his company. Eldon Albertson
