This outback odyssey sets out early from Broome on Day 1, so consider arriving a day or two early if keen to soak up the town's famously mellow vibe. Today's schedule is fairly attraction-packed: enjoy a morning tea by the Fitzroy River, stop by Derby's 'Boab Prison Tree', and enter the Napier Range. A virtual outback oasis of freshwater pools and rich vegetation, Windjana Gorge makes for a very picturesque picnic lunch setting. Explore the sprawling cave complex of Tunnel Creek in the company of a local indigenous Bunuba guide, then wind down with a waterhole swim before making camp for the night.
Spend a full day discovering the natural delights of Bell Gorge.
Hitting the road again, stop in for a dip in lovely Adcock Gorge. Tonight is spent camped out on the grounds of Mt Elizabeth homestead, a working cattle ranch set amid classic outback bushland. Your spare time here won't go to waste: head out by 4WD for explorations of nearby gorges, wallow about in the local waterholes or throw a line in down the creek and see what bites.
Spend two days becoming acquainted with the natural beauty of the Mitchell Plateau. Rumble through rivers by 4WD, hear the perplexing circumstances surrounding Bradshaw rock art and perhaps sign up for a helicopter flight over this dramatic landscape.
Experience more life-on-the-land at the Drysdale River Station, a family owned and run cattle ranch covering some one million acres.
Resuming the journey along Gibb River Road, come to El Questro Wilderness Park. Put your free hours here to good use trekking through El Questro Gorge, soaking up the serenity of Zebedee Springs or embarking on a cruise down Chamberlain Gorge.
Cruise down the Great Northern Highway to Purnululu National Park, home of the Bungle Bungles. With a campsite inside the national park serving as base, there'll be plenty of opportunity for exploring all that this unique biosphere has to offer. During the two days here you'll be taken through the massive red rock bulbs of the Bungle Bungles, weave through Echidna Chasm and enter the natural amphitheatre of Cathedral Gorge. If looking to splash out a little, you could do a whole lot worse than signing up for a helicopter ride around the region.
Continue deeper east into the Kimberley to Kununurra for a cruise out onto Lake Argyle. Australia's second-largest artificial lake, this vast stretch of water is home to a huge gamut of bird and wildlife; much of which you'll hopefully get to see on a Ord River Cruise.
Cross the state border into the Northern Territory. Tonight's accommodation is in the small town of Katherine, launching pad for forays into Nitmiluk Gorge.
Chug through the waters of Nitmiluk's rightly famous gorges, all the while learning of the area's cultural significance to its traditional owners, the Jawoyn people. There'll be time for one last dip, this time in Edith Falls, before a late afternoon arrival in Darwin.
