Delve into the colourful city-scape of Ecuador's sprawling capital, Quito. Head for Calle La Ronda to get a feel for the country's colonial past, stroll through eclectic market stalls or pick a plaza cafe to settle down in and watch local life unfurl.
Travel by boat into the Amazon for a taste of local life on a family homestay. Try to spot the endemic animal and insect life during a guided tour into the depths of the jungle.
Go on a hike in the hills, raft whitewater rapids or saddle up for a gallop through the lush forests of Banos. Then soak those weary bones in the town's hot springs and check out some traditional Ecuadorian music at an atmospheric local bar.
Return to Quito for a jaunt out to the famous Otavalo market. Although relatively small in size, this is one of the most enthralling traditional markets in all of the Americas, and it's a great place to stock up on gorgeously coloured handwoven fabrics, ornate wooden carvings and original Panama hats.
