Highlights of our Western Australia walking tours

Explore Karijini National Park
While it might not be as well-known as its northerly neighbour the Kimberleys, Karijini National Park deserves the same level of love and admiration because of its unspoiled natural beauty. Explore the rugged terrain of the park – including Kalamina Gorge, Kermit’s Pool, and Mt Bruce – with your group and bond over the magical colours of the landscape as you put one foot in front of the other.

Catch a sunset with your group
Sometimes the best views appear without having to walk several kilometres through a national park or up a mountain range. Whether you’re in charming Exmouth or at Cape Mentelle, sitting down to watch the sky shift colours as the sun sets with a cold drink in hand is one of life’s great pleasures. Throw in the newfound friends you’ve made along the way, and you’ve got a memory for the record books.

Walk along the clifftops of Margaret River
The Margaret River region might be known for its wine-making but its breathtaking coastal scenery is more than enough to captivate travellers on its own. From enjoying epic clifftop views to spotting dolphins playing around in the peaky surf, walking along this part of the Cape-to-Cape track is guaranteed to remind you that Australia has some of the best landscapes in the world.

Tackle Australia’s iconic Cape to Cape track
Winding between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin, Western Australia’s Cape-to-Cape track is undoubtedly one of the more extraordinary walks Australia has to offer. Not only is it the best way to absorb Western Australia’s stunning coastal landscapes, but the sense of accomplishment and achievement you’ll feel after having walked for over 130km is simply unbeatable.

Snorkel through the waters of Ningaloo Reef
It’s time to take your feet off the land and into the water on a snorkelling adventure over Western Australia’s beloved Ningaloo Reef. Treat your eyes to tropical fish, such as clownfish and sea anemones, and vibrant, rainbow-coloured coral as you move gently through the turquoise water. You might even see a manta ray or two to top off an experience your friends will be jealous of when you come home bearing photos.

Swim with whale sharks off the Coral Coast
If you thought snorkelling over the brightly coloured coral of Ningaloo Reef was as good as your marine adventure was going to get, you have another unforgettable thing coming. Embark on a truly life-changing (optional) experience off Western Australia’s Coral Coast – swimming with whale sharks. Known as the gentle giants of the sea, sharing the water with these sharks is less terrifying and more magical. Trust us.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). There are several ways to get to Western Australia including flying, catching public transport, and self-driving, with the most time-efficient one being different depending on where you're travelling from. There are over 10 public airports you can fly into in Western Australia but the most popular one is Perth Airport. From there, it's easy to organise transportation to your final destination of either Margaret River or further inland.
While it's possible to visit Western Australia during any month of the year, it's not advisable to embark on a walking tour during the summer months as the temperatures often exceed 35°C+. The best time to join a walking tour is from March through to November as the weather is likely to be mild and conducive to spending long periods of time outside.
Our Western Australia walking tours are all about action and adventure so there is no need to bring any fancy clothes. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are a must, even in winter, as the sun reflects off the water and the white sand of the Margaret River region and Ningaloo Reef. Bring a good pair of walking shoes so you can explore the national parks comfortably. A light jumper is useful if you are going to be out on the water for lengthy periods of time.
If you would like to do a particular tour at Ningaloo Reef such as swimming with whale sharks, you should book sooner rather than later as popular tours frequently book out.
Western Australia has some of the best national parks in the country so it's little surprise there are plenty of walks to choose from on your walking tour of the state. While we could put at least twenty down, we've settled on the best 5:
- Kitty’s Gorge Walk Trail to Serpentine Falls, Jarrahdale
- Bibbulmun Track, Kalamunda to Albany
- Cape to Cape Walk, Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin
- Great Ocean Way, Esperance
- Mt. Bruce Summit, Karijini National Park
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
