LGBTQIA+ travel in India
The joy of travel is for everyone. Here’s what you need to know as an LGBTQIA+ traveller in India
Everyone has the right to feel safe and comfortable when travelling and that’s why we don’t tolerate any form of discrimination on our trips. Travelling with a small group and local leader provides a layer of safety, but there are still some things to keep in mind before you set off on your adventure to India.
Is India safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?
The majority of Indian society is still conservative and while most travellers will have a welcoming and hospitable experience, discretion is still advised, particularly in remote towns and villages which may be more conservative.
The same advice is also given to couples of all sexual orientations, as public displays of affection are generally frowned upon regardless of sexuality. However, like in many other traditional and conservative countries, there is more tolerance of queer travellers compared to queer Indians due to the importance of tourism, and LGTBQIA+ travellers are unlikely to experience any issues.
Of course, there’s safety in numbers and small-group travel helps to alleviate some worries, especially when you travel with a local leader you can lean on for questions or support.

LGBTQIA+ rights in India
While homosexuality has been decriminalised in India, LGBTQIA+ rights remain complex and continue to evolve. Transgender people have gained legal recognition as a third gender, marking an important step forward, but same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex couples are still not legally recognised.
India doesn’t have comprehensive federal laws that explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation in terms of housing, employment or public services, but the Indian Constitution offers some protections against discrimination by the state.
LGBTQIA+ culture in India
Because of societal views toward same-sex relations, queer scenes in India are limited and generally only found in big cities like Mumbai and Delhi, but they’re still quite discreet. That being said, Mumbai is making its mark in the LGBTQIA+ activism space, and the city is home to a queer film festival called KASHISH. Some queer-friendly bars can also be found in places like Kolkata, Chennai and Goa, and most big cities across the country host annual Pride parades.
Travelling with us
We know safety is one of the top concerns for LGBTQIA+ folk. But when you travel with us, you can rest assured we’ve got your back.
Intrepid travellers span all ages and backgrounds, and regardless of local laws or attitudes, our leaders are committed to ensuring everyone feels safe and comfortable. We don’t tolerate any forms of discrimination, violence or harassment – either between travellers, with our partners or with local people. Even in countries with limited LGBTQIA+ rights, you’ll always be welcomed and supported by us.
Twin-share is the standard arrangement on our trips. We pair solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender listed on your passport. If you identify differently from the gender on your passport, please get in touch to discuss rooming options. If you’d like your own space, individual rooms are available on most trips for an additional cost.
