How to get to Margaret River

The easiest way to get to Margaret River is to fly to Busselton (if you're coming from or travelling via Melbourne). The next best option is to travel via Perth — either by driving, or jumping on a coach or train.

By air

The closest airport is Busselton, 50 kilometres north of Margaret River. Jetstar runs three flights per week between Busselton and Melbourne.

The next closest airports are Perth and Albany. Perth may be the most convenient airport to fly to as it's serviced by over 20 international, domestic and regional airlines. The drive from Albany to Margaret River takes roughly 4.5 hours.

By car

The drive from Perth to Margaret River takes approximately 3 hours and is fairly straightforward. You can take the Kwinana Freeway out of Perth which eventually leads onto the Forrest Highway. From here, follow the directions to Bunbury, Busselton and then Margaret River.

You can also take the South Western Freeway inland. It takes slightly longer, but the drive is more scenic.

By public transport

Western Australia is vast and remote, and public transport is limited. However, you can take a coach from Perth to Margaret River with South West Coach Lines via Busselton. The journey takes about 5 hours and you get a generous luggage allowance.

You can also take the Australind train with TransWA via Bunbury, which connects with a Westrail bus to Margaret River. The journey takes about 5 hours.

Getting around Margaret River

If you're not travelling to Margaret River as part of a tour, you really need a car to get around. Apart from coach and train in and out of the Margaret River region, there's no public transport. The main township is compact and easy to walk around, but it's difficult to explore the wineries and beaches without a vehicle.
